Another Exciting Project

Top – UO; Skirt – c/o Emerging Thoughts; Leggings & Silver ring – F21; Boots – Feet First; Bicycle ring – Spotted Moth.

Over the weekend I shot a fabulous character called ‘Nadia Burkoff’ – sex therapist, life coach and beauty queen.  This is a hilarious character created by a dear friend of mine, and one of my newest exciting projects.  So far, I’ve shot the promotion shoot *you can see some pictures here* and done a brief interview about Nadia’s new book.  But as I’ve taken on the role of producer/director for this burgeoning series, I’ve got a lot more insanity and hilarity planned for the future.  In the meantime, I appreciate you checking out the video of the interview, as well some of the promo shots.  Thanks!

Windy And Animated

Skirt – c/o Emerging Thoughts; Top – hand me down; Cardi – Tulle from Ruche; Hair Bow – Ruche; Belt – F21; Tights – Hue; Boots – Locale.

Have you guys checked out Emerging Thoughts? This store has some seriously cool stuff there like this Tapestry Coat that I’m totally drooling over, or the Reality Bites Dress!  I want that dress just because it reminds me of the seminal film of my youth, you know what I’m talking about all you Ethan Hawke fans.  And for all us Canadian shoppers, they have really affordable shipping.  Bonus!

When I got this Uncle Phuncle skirt in the mail I was so excited to wear it because it has so many wonderful elements working for it.  It’s a clean simple grey color *and you know, that’s my ‘black’* it has a cute little bow, but it’s not too big, and it has a bit of a pouf but again, just the right amount.  Actually, that’s the first two things people said about – that it’s classic and poufy but just the right amount.   I have to say that I’m a big fan. My suggestion?  Hop your butts over to Emerging Thoughts and get yourself some of their sweet stuff.

Oh and what do you think of the animation?  It’s the first time I’ve used it, and it won’t become a regular feature, but for some reason it felt appropriate for the two photos used.  It was just a crazy photo taking moment with the wild wind and Baby chatting away, some movement had to be involved in this post!

True Story:
Baby has just discovered that when she closes her eyes
and covers them with her hands she’s, “Gone! Gone!”
Don’t worry, she can come back.
She just takes her hands off her eyes.

Opening A Can Of Worms

A person recently tweeted *and I’m paraphrasing* “To those who think gay marriage ruins the institution of marriage, I have two words: Kim Kardashian.”  That got me thinking, not about gay marriage – because I’m not going to touch that debate with a ten foot pole – but about marriage and what is meant when we, as a society, talk about protecting it.

Marriage throughout history was used as the official stamp on things: alliances, deals, contracts, peace agreements, etc. They were all sealed with a marriage between the two parties.  Even those not in the well-to-do ranks or aristocracy *this goes beyond Europe, and I use aristocracy to mean the upper castes of society* used marriage to seal deals – whether that was to secure two farms to each other, secure care for a daughter, or just to get rid of a mouth to feed. *’cause that’s what an extra daughter was thought as being*  Our modern idea of marriage has been present throughout history as well – I think love has always been –  but it was either an accident, luxury, or done out of wedlock.  Poorer people often had what we consider ‘marriage’ but they had it outside wedlock and without the sanction of the church, or ruling authority, because it was common that people couldn’t pay for a ceremony or pay taxes/fees to their lord to be allowed to marry.

My question is this, what exactly are we talking about protecting?  The institution of marriage has not been sacred historically – it’s been a rubber stamp, which we don’t need anymore since we have lawyers and contracts and courts.  Our modern idea of marriage was considered a foolish notion, indulgence, or occurred without official sanction – people just lived together as man and wife.

So are we talking about protecting the 1950s idea of marriage?  The one where women had no real means, or power and stayed in abusive marriages because of lack of options, or had to marry because of the same? Is that what we’re protecting?

I know what marriage means to me.  I know how strongly I believe in it and how important I think it is.  But I also know that the institution of marriage is not a pure and innocent thing.  It has routinely been used without regard for the two individuals involved, so I’m not particularly adamant in protecting it either.  I’ve seen people enter into it casually and leave just as casually *Britney Spears 72 hours Vegas wedding, anyone?* and I’ve seen first hand people live together in love for decades without being ‘married.’

If we’re protecting the idea of what a love marriage means, well then I don’t think we should worry because as I said, love marriages have always been around and have survived despite humanity’s best efforts to use them as a tool.
So I repeat my question, what exactly are we talking about protecting?
And that’s not rhetorical.  I want to know.   I don’t mean to open up a controversial topic, I’m just inquisitive and curious, and I’d like to know what we’re talking about.  I want to define exactly what is being debated.

p.s. sorry about the blurry pics.  Yesterday was crazy and I had five minutes to grab a record of what I wore.

Detoxing

Top & Skirt – hand me down; Belt – F21; Shoes – Lulus.com

Hello beautiful people!  How I’ve missed you.  I’m finally feeling much better and my energy is almost completely up.  So, I’ll be back to my regularily scheduled posting. I’m also part of am amazing project launching on Monday, but I’ll give you those details tomorrow.

It’s bright and sunny outside and I can’t wait to get out there with Baby and play in the park.  I’ve started a full body detox so I am having a few rough days as the worst part of the detox is right at the beginning, and my skin is going wild with acne.  But I know at the end it’ll be so worth it when I’m healthier and more energetic, and my skin will be a whole lot better too.  Have you changed anything recently?  Notice any difference?

And Now Back To You

Top & Dress – F21; Cardi – Smart Set; Shoes – Payless.

Some days I just don’t have a lot to say about things.  Shocking I know.  I’ve been crazy busy organizing things and working on stuff, so I haven’t really had a lot of time to reflect. The only thing I have to say is that I love mixing prints.  It’s something I’ve never experimented with before and now I’m addicted.

But right now, I’m gonna turn it over to you.  Tell me what you’re pondering today.

True Story:
Just in case you weren’t aware, all four legged creatures are “how how”  (dog barking) and all birds are “Qua Qua” (ducking quacking).
At least according to Baby.

Gambling On Contradictions

Shirt – Jacob; Skirt & Belt – H&M; Shoes – Payless.

Sorry about no Random Sunday post. I was veeeeerrry tired, headach-ey, and time of the month-ey.  So I crashed. Hey, no one’s perfect right?

I love that I managed to nab this skirt for only $10!  Granted I was 8 months pregnant at the time.  And no I didn’t fit in it then, I took a gamble that I would return to my pre-pregnancy size.  I figured that for $10 I could take the risk.  But I’m so glad that it paid off.  I love the pleats and a-line of this skirt, but I also really like how the retro nature of it is balanced by the abstract, almost bleeding, pattern.  It makes the whole piece more modern I think.  Pieces that have this contradictory nature appeal because they are always really interesting and fresh.

Wearing My Walkin’ Hat

Hat – Ruche; Skirt as dress – on the beach in Barcelona; Belt – F21; Shoes – Zellers.

Here’s why I love fashion:  You can be endlessly creative with it.  You can nip, tuck, pin, twist, tie, belt, and loop to you hearts content and create an ever varying assortment of outfits.  And one of my fave things is the miraculous ability of maxi skirts to become dresses just by nipping a belt around your waist.

And though you’re probably tired of seeing my summer staples – large sunglasses and a wide brim hat – I’m loving them.  Sun protection hound that I am, I wear both these things and SPF 45 on my face.  What can I say?  I rock the pasty white look.

True Story:
Drake the Dog lying asleep on the couch.  Baby comes over and I expect her to smack him or poke him, but what does she do instead?  She leans in real close and puts her little nose right up against his and just stares at him.
For a really long time.
Then she pokes him.
Still, it’s an improvement.

Skirts Abound With Boho-Casual

Top – Smart Set; Belt – AE; Skirt – Zara; Booties – Aldo.

I was on the set of Posthuman shooting an awesome episode today!  Seriously, it’s gonna be sooo good.   But that’s why I don’t have an outfit pic for you.  Instead, I’m showcasing an outfit that’s a few days old. Hope you like it!  I certainly do, but that’s because I’m having a love affair with Maxis recently.  Shhh, don’t tell Husband.   He doesn’t suspect anything.

In the meantime, check out this video.  It’s a little behind-the-scenes at the Movieola studio. *and I’ll be posting those outfit pic tomorrow, so it’s also like a sneak peek*

Happy Sunday!

I-Have-Nothing-To-Wear

Having a little trouble with the umbrella.

Success!

Glasses – F21; Shirt – Walmart; Skirt – Gentlefawn; Boots – Petite Pied.

First off, welcome to all my new followers!  And thank you sooooo much for reading.  You totally make my day!

Now, do you ever have those days when everything you put on looks horrible on you?  *at least in your mind* Well, I had a day like that with the above outfit.  I spent forever *and in a Mom’s life forever is like, 30 minutes* trying on tons of stuff.  I hated everything I put on.  One of those I-have-nothing-to-wear days.  It’s not that I have nothing to wear, it’s just that everything I put on just doesn’t sit right today, or just doesn’t feel right, or just doesn’t project the image I want today.  So I gave up.  I put on a skirt I like and just tried to keep things simple and not go nuts.  It’s just one day.  And I have to just get through this funky mood.  And I did.  And so will you.

True Story:
Me squealing about something pretty on a website that I want.
And Husband’s answer to me squealing, “Yeah, and you have so many pretty things upstairs.”
Poo!
I don’t like it when he’s right.

Standing Out In A Sea Of Beauty

Top – Ruche; Maxi – Spotted Moth; Booties – Aldo.

A friend and I were recently talking about beauty.  We were discussing the prevalence of a certain standard of beauty in society and the pressure we both feel to live up to it, and the fact that we both deviate from said standard in highly “negative” ways.  So it’s kind of interesting that in the September issue of Flare magazine (a Canadian fashion magazine) there was a whole reader survey about beauty, standards, and pressures.

Us Canucks had some interesting things to say:
The images we see on the internet, and social networking sites on a daily basis heighten our expectations of beauty and perfection in ourselves.  This sets the bar higher and higher for ourselves, and we feel a pressure to live up to it daily.  And while most of us have a dissatisfaction with our body shape and weight, overall we feel beautiful.

Do you agree?

This sort of goes along with what my friend and I were talking about.  The prevalence of amazing photos, and such a huge assortment of beautiful women makes both of us feel we have to live up to some unachievable bar of beauty.

Do you struggle with weight and body image?  Do you feel beautiful?  In such a menagerie of beauty, how do you stand out?

Just a side note since we’re talking about photos, I’ve been just using curves and color balance exclusively in my photos recently.  So how do you like it?
