Whimsy Of Yellow

Pins – c/o Blue Eyed Owl; Cardi – Gap; Dress – Ruche; Top – H&M; Belt – F21; Tights – Hue; Boots – Threadsence.

I’ve been eyeing the lovely shade of mustard yellow that’s so popular for fall.  It’s such a warm, rich color that is just so appealing.  But I can’t wear yellow. Or rather I don’t – not “can’t.”  If you put me in something yellow or yellow toned, not only does it wash me out, but I look like I have some severe stage of jaundice.  I think it’s the combination of my very fair skin and the olive undertones that run throughout it. So when Liz contacted me with the opportunity to select and try out some of her delightful handmade accessories I yipped with glee when I saw that the Mustard & Cobalt Pinwheel Bobby Pin set had just the yellow I’ve been craving.  And to top it all off I had just nabbed this belt for $3, so putting to two together just seemed to make sense.

These are beautifully made and I adore the whimsy of pinwheels in my hair.  It makes me feel like I’m going to have a soft breeze caressing my hair.   Her shop has some really pretty things, like these earrings and this lovely pin/ brooch.  I think it would look stunning as a decorative piece in a fun messy updo.  Personally, I’m pleased as punch that I can satisfy my yellow craving while avoiding looking like an extra on AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”

Smiling

Jacket – Old Navy, Dress and Undertunic Ruche; Belt – AE; Shoes – Payless.

The thing I love about dresses is just how easy it is to slip them on and go.  I wore this outfit a little bit ago, when it was warm and just never got around to posting it.  This dress was one of my first purchases from Ruche, and it’s definitely a good decision.   I love how it’s feminine, comfortable and easy to wash *big bonus for a busy mama* But what I like most about it is that it always makes me smile.  It’s just not possible to be down when you have on a pretty pink dress with flowers all over it.

If you have a moment, check out my guest post over here.  I’m writing about all things vintage and thrifted.  I love me some cheap clothes!

Baby grabbed a lemon and started licking it.
Then making that sour face we all know.
Then licking it again.

Dino DNA

Top – Lucca Couture; Scarf – Trove; Belt & Dress – F21; Shoes – Payless.

It’s raining!  It’s pouring!  Drake the Dog is snoring!  No really, he is.  Husband is away and Drake has been sleeping on the bed with me  – the guy not only snores, but moans and yips in his sleep too.  I don’t know what’s going on in his head at night but it’s clearly something exciting.

Since it is really coming down here today, and I’m feeling extremely lazy I’m posting some pics from two days ago when it was sunny and nice and I could take pictures outside.  I just don’t have any place indoors with good lighting.  And natural light is always best I think.

Also, I’ve been watching Terra Nova and even though it’s kind of cheesy and predictable sometimes *a lot actually*  I’m really liking it.  I think it’s something about any tv show with dinosaurs getting an automatic pass from me….that and aliens.  I loooove me some cool green men.  *that sounds wrong, but you know what I mean*  What do you guys think of it?

A Walk To Remember

So yesterday I mentioned the challenge of dressing for cool mornings and hot afternoons.  The shedding of layers meant that by the time we headed out for a sunset walk I was down to just a dress, hat and large sunnies.

It’s so great now that Baby is getting really good at walking because that means we all head out together and watch her waddle down the gravel path, picking things up and talking the whole way.

Her favorite part is when we get to the bridge and big rock where she gets her first look of all the ducks and Canade Geese on the pond.

My Father-In-Law is usually very proper, but sometimes he busts out some hilarious faces.  This shot was nabbed by Husband, and though out of focus, it’s one of my favs!

You can hear Baby yelling “Qua!  Qua!” all throughout the walk!  And she makes sure that everyone knows exactly what they are…just in case you were wondering.

While there, we witnessed a huge flock of geese landing on the pond.

Dressing Can Be Hard

Jacket – F21; Belt – Threadsence; Sweater – Costa Blanca; Dress – Guess; Boots – Feet First; Bag – Matt by Matt&Nat.

The weather is very weird and hard to dress for.  This morning when getting ready and when leaving it was chilly, but by about 11:30am it was humid and hot.  So it’s a matter of dressing in layers, and considering each layer as it comes.  For example, once the mercury rose a touch, I ditched the jacket, then I ditched the sweater leaving a belt around my waist for interest.  Finally, around 2pm once it got even hotter, I couldn’t handle anything constricting my waist any longer.  And out came the sun hat.  I’ll show you that tomorrow since it involved a fun walk around the pond with Baby and the In-Laws *down for Thanksgiving*

I could use more suggestions for dressing for such weather.  Any thought?

When The Rains Come

Jacket – Smart Set; Dress – Ruche; Tights – Hue; Boots – Petite Pied.

This agent search has been pretty interesting so far.  I got an email from one agency which was actually quite brusque and another from a very large agency that was actually very professional and polite.  I appreciated the president of the large agency taking the time to write me one or two sentences to let me know where they’re at.  Now, I’m hopeful that something good will come of it, but I’m also of the mind that you plan for the worst, but hope for the best.  So right now, I’m not sure what I’m planning for but I’m keeping my umbrella up!

But what’s been really interesting is the people who have come to my support.  I reached out to friends and fellow actors, and help has come from the most surprising places.  Whereas it’s been absent from sources I would’ve thought would be forthcoming.  Funny how that always happens eh?  On the whole though, I’m blessed to have people around me who support and encourage me.  And regardless of the end result,  this process has made me touch base and discover new people.  Something positive just has to come out of that!

So Busy And Excited

Top – Ruche; Jeans – Gap; Boots – Feet First.

I’m really kind of pumped for the next three days.  I’m doing a Movieola live shift tonight, then on no sleep I’m popping down to Center Island to shoot an engagement shoot for a fabulous couple followed by possibly meeting up and talking shop with a really talented actress.   Then Friday I’m shooting a domestic violence PSA, finishing off with TAing an acting class on Saturday and doing a fun creative photoshoot on Saturday night *this time with me as the model*.   Crazy!  But I’m really pumped about all this fun activity.  As you can tell by the verbal spewage that just occurred.

And on another totally fun note, are you as excited by the new TV season as me?  I’m watching all the premieres of my favorite shows and finding some new ones.  Loved Community, and am looking forward to House on Monday.  What about you?  Have you seen Pan-Am?  I haven’t.  Would you reccomend it?

Baby now says, “Uh-oh!”

Giddy As A Schoolgirl

I wore this jacket in the cooler morning weather.

If you dropped by my house, you’d find me wearing this fun apron over my daily outfit.

Shirt – thrifted; Dress – Ruche; Shoes – Payless.

Okay, so I actually didn’t get dressed yesterday.  I threw jeans on to go to the park with Baby, but I didn’t actually put on any kind of decent clothing.  Mostly, it was pajamas for me.   I did however get dressed today.

It’s so beautiful outside that it hardly feels like fall.  *which it technically isn’t until Friday*  I know that Fall is associated with darker, deeper colors and I’m all for seasonal dressing. But I also enjoy wearing bright, happy colors year round.  I don’t really follow rules that way.  I’ll wear white after labour day, black with brown and navy, and I’ll wear a sundress in the middle of winter *though I’ll layer it with tights, tops and sweaters – often turning it into a skirt*  So despite it being fall, I didn’t in the least mind throwing on this pretty summer dress.  I love the twirl quotient of this dress.  It always makes me giddy as a schoolgirl.

And I can never resist jumping in it.  *as seen here*

True Story:
At play group today, one of the moms went off to breast feed her daughter.
Her 20 month old daughter.
To me, it felt a little old to still be breastfeeding with such regularity.
Thoughts?  When is a child too old to breastfeed to in your opinion?

‘Wife’ And Other Ruminations

Sweater – Ruche; Dress – Coco&Tashi; Socks – Hue; Shoes – Payless; Belt – Covet.

I was reading an article on the meaning of the word wife in the Globe and Mail, in which the writer speaks of the connotations of the word and how women are either resistant to it or embracing of it.  Everything she points out is true: it used to deny women rights, it has certain anti-feminist connotations even today, some people are embracing it in a new way.  But what she forgets to mention is “husband.”  She says that being a ‘wife’ is limiting and implies a role that’s subservient, but also how women are taking back the word, though many are wary of it.  But though the word ‘wife’ may be intimidating because of past expectations, so is the modern word ‘husband’ because of modern expectations. In the past the husband was the king of the castle who owned his wife and children.  Not anymore.

The modern ‘husband’ is expected to treat his wife equally *of course*, be supportive, not dominating at all *sometimes men are so afraid of this label that they become doormats*, chivalrous *but not cross over into patronizing*, father, role-model, homemaker *at least half of the time*, and bread winner *at least half the time*.  They have to redefine what it means to be a man and a husband.  It’s a task as hard as defining what it means to be a woman and wife.  We should all cut ourselves some slack and take it easy on both ‘husbands’ and ‘wives.’

I Fully Admit To No Pride

Scarf – street stand; Dress – hand me down from a friend; Shoes – thrifted; Socks – Walmart.

Some people have certain standards, or qualms, embarrassments what have you.  I don’t.  I like to pinch a penny, cut corners, and otherwise do whatever else I can to save time, money, or energy.  And don’t even get me started on what I’ll do for a laugh!  This doesn’t mean I don’t put effort into things.  I have a strong work ethic, and I always put 100% into whatever I do.  It’s just that I think I’m selective and have certain perspectives about what’s really important and what’s not.

So when a friend said she had a dress that she was looking to hand down to someone, I was more than willing to volunteer to take it off her hands.  I know some people who feel embarrassed to take things other people give away; it’s an “I don’t need charity” mentality.  And I understand their fear of looking less than what they feel they are.  But I think vintage, used, recycled, etc. is great because it saves our resources and uses less money.  Two great things about that:  one, it saves the planet a little and leaves a slightly better place for my little one.  And two, it saves me money leaving more for those dress purchases I can’t resist and for Baby’s education *Harvard here we come!*

So thanks Mares for this great dress!  And Baby will thank you when she graduates from Harvard law school….or Yale…I’m flexible.
