Do Not Go Gentle

Dress – Threadsence  //  Necklace – Ruche  //  Tights & Belts – F21  //  Shoes – Walmart

I know many today are staying silent on their blogs in support of the Sandy Hook elementary staff, and I’m not saying that’s wrong.  I’m not saying you should continue writing about cute crafty DIYs today.  But I’m not a silent person and I urge you not to be either.  I’m not an American citizen so I can’t write to my congressman stating my outrage at the lack of gun control, and support for mental health funding.  I can’t write or demonstrate my disgrace in my government’s failure to support it’s mentally ill citizens, or to protest media coverage.  I can’t write and say anything of the sort to effect change, because I am not an American citizen.  But I can urge those of you who are to not be silent today.

If you are staying silent on your blog today, do so because you are too busy writing to your government representatives to express your views, do so because you are out volunteering, do so because you are too busy today focusing on change to think about anything else.  In support of recent events, silence is not a solution in my mind. Fight against the dying of the light.

Dressember Week Two Link Up

Cardi, Necklace & Belt – F21  //  Shirt – H&M  //  Dress – Ruche
Tights – HUE  //  Boots – Locale  //  Ring – Spotted Moth
Yesterday was a bit of a write off.  Baby Girl is sick so we spent the day in a blur of tiredness and cuddles on the couch.  C’est la vie.  But on a brighter note, we’re halfway through Dressember!  So far, I’ve had a great time.  I’m so excited to see how your second week went.
So please link up your round up post, your favorite post, or a favorite Instagram/twitter/FB pic.  If you can, I’d love for you to grab the button and display it on your post.  It’s much appreciated.

Fashion Blogger Photobomb

Dress – ASOS  //  Cardi – H&M  //  Boot – Feet First  //  Necklace & Bag – Ruche  //  Belt – F21

When
you’re a mama who’s trying to take outfit shots, well you have to
expect that photobomb once in a while. And really, come on, what was I
thinking trying to take a close up of my bag and necklace?  That’s just
too tempting for a little one and immediately warrants investigation. So trust me, there were some pretty incredible shots planned, and some masterful close ups too.  Instead, you get a pink jacket, my weird faces, and one cute little bum!

p.s. that first really intense shot?  Yeah, that’s me staring her down as she thinks about reaching for my camera.

True Story:
They both have poo on their feet here.  Yup.  I lead one heck of a glamorous life.

When You Get To Hit Someone With A Stick

Dress – Monteau  //  Top – hand me down  //  Tights – Hue
Shoes – Payless  //  Necklace – c/o Imprintalish
Andrew says to me, “I’ll make you a deal.  You sew and fix my jacket
and I’ll give you a foot massage tonight.”  Now, first off I get foot
massages fairly regularly so I can afford to be a little cavalier about
them.  Secondly, I have a dislocated baby toe due to something Andrew
did so I’m already not feeling overly generous towards him. Therefore I
say,”Fine, but I get to hit you with a large stick anytime you touch my
injure toe.”  Foolishly he agrees.

So later that night he says,”Let’s get together and I’ll give you that massage.”
“One
minute,” I answer and walk upstairs.  Andrew settles himself on the
couch and I return shortly with one of my Kali sticks in hand.  He
thought I was joking earlier.

Normally, he’s
terrible at remembering an injury. It’s not the first time we’ve made
this sort of deal and I know how this goes, therefore I had to add the
‘stick’ amendment.  But I think I’m really onto something as this time,
with the looming threat of being bashed repeatedly with a weapon, he
steers clear of the injury and the trade goes down without a hitch.

Frankly,
I was a little disappointed.  I mean, how often does someone give you permission to hit them with a stick?

My Favorite Girlfriend

Sweater & Cords – Le Chateau  //  Top – Ruche  //  Boots – Feet First
Flower necklace – F21  //  Tribal necklace – Threadsence  //  Scarf – street stand

Do you know who I love hanging out with?  My daughter.  Okay, yeah, I know it goes without saying so.  You love your children and you have to and that’s normal.  But I’m noticing that as she’s getting older, though I’m missing the baby cuddles, I’m loving the new fun and quirky girl I get to hang out with.  She’s so weird and she finds the oddest things funny!  What happens though, is that I end up laughing at those things too.  And so we spend a day full of laughing at weird things, and having strange conversations, and celebrating her farts.

Now it may not be high brow, and I may still need the occasional adult conversation, but I must say it’s becoming fun to hang out with her as a person and not just as my baby.

My Own Private Little Nona

Pants & Vest – F21  //  Top – H&M  //  Necklace – bought in Europe  //  Boots – Feet First
It made me so happy to nab the exact faux fur vest I wanted for 50% off at F21.  When I tried it on it immediately made me feel like Nancy Kovak as ‘Nona‘ in Star Trek’s “A Private Little War.”  Though it’s not bright orange, and I’m not nearly as sexy as the seductive ‘Nona,’  I felt a little wilder wearing it.  Also, the complete geek in me loved walking around all day in my own personal little Star Trek world.

True Story:
Baby Girl is currently obsessed with Plants vs. Zombies.
She walks around all day asking for “Zombies!”
So I sit there playing the game on my tablet while she watches, comments, and pushes the screen randomly.
With the occasional, “Watch out!”

The Long Goodbye

Jacket – F21  //  Sweater – Cotton Candy from Ruche  //  Jeans – Gap  //  Boots – Threadsence  //  Scarf – Urban Outfitters

These pictures are from a few days ago, and I’m sad to say that I’ve lost these boots.  They are peeling now.  The faux leather top layer is literally coming away from the rest of the boot.  So they’re going in the garbage. I’m really sad to see them go especially as they’re only ten months old, but there’s no fixing something like that.

Saying goodbye to a pair of shoes is sort of like saying goodbye to an old friend.   I find that you wear shoes more than certain pieces in your closet, and so there’s a lot of sentimentality attached to that item.  We’ve been through good and bad, and it feels like a kind of betrayal to just toss them out.

But at the same time, they are just an inanimate object and I am probably anthropomorphizing them just a touch too much.

True Story:
Baby Girl is taking a bath, playing, and generally having a great time.
Suddenly she stops, looks at me dead serious and says, “Grandma stinky.  Stiiiiinky.”
I don’t know where that come from, but I bet there’s a story there.

Give Me A Good Cliche

Dress – Blue Pepper from Ruche  //  Necklace, Bracelet, and Earrings – Threadsence  //  Tights – F21  //  Boots – Feet First

There’s something about the combination of brown and blue, especially a really rich tone, that feels just perfect for Fall.  It’s one of those palettes that has just been made for the season.  It’s almost become a cliche just because it looks so right, but hey, I’ve never been one to shy away from a good cliche. They become cliches for a reason.

And I’d rather listen to a good cliche any day over some of the dribble that I hear on a daily basis.  Like the teenage girls on the metro who were talking about not wanting to exercise to get thin because they don’t feel like it, so instead they take diet pills…along with all their other pills.  Sometimes I just want to shake young women, or sit in a corner and cry.  Do you realize what you’re putting into your body?  Do you realize what ideal you’re buying into?

I’ll take a good cliche any day.

 True Story:
Andrew is cooking and Drake the Dog is not more than two inches away from him at all times in the hopes that something will fall, or that he’ll get offered some treat.  Andrew offers him a piece of celery.  Drake takes it walks away and drops it on the floor in distaste.  Baby Girl, who just happens to be sitting right there, picks up the celery without missing a beat.  And pops it into her mouth saying, “Thank you Dwake!” Only time she’s ever eaten celery.

Fall Upcycled Pieces

Necklace – c/o Imprintalish
Top – H&M
Jacket – Gap
Skirt – Skies Are Blue
Tights – F21
Boots – Threadsence

Fall is fully in bloom here.  Yes, I say that sarcastically since, what it means is that nothing is actually blooming, but instead dying.  I’m not a big fan of Fall.  I love the first week because I pull out my sweaters and boots, and then I’m over it.  I know it means we’re in for several long months of winter and cold, and really, I could totally pass on that!

But it does mean the return of darker colors and richer tones.  That I really enjoy.  So when I recently got the opportunity to style a piece from Imprintalish, I naturally navigated toward this necklace in a darker hue.  It also seemed perfect because I immediately thought of a white shirt.  Then I just had to build the rest of the outfit around those two pieces.  And this was the result.

I loved the idea of pairing this very cool upcycled necklace with a white top because it’s a great way to make something office-like *the white shirt* look unique and chic. I can see someone in an business atmosphere pairing this with a blazer and trousers, or a cute pencil skirt and being professional, yet totally one of a kind.

That’s what’s so great about Imprintalish.  All the styles are neutral enough to be worn in so many different venues and occasions, but unique enough that people will be asking, “Where’d you get that?”  I’m thinking I may have to get this piece next.  You? What would you get?

Starbuck and Jadzia Dax

Jacob jacket // ModCloth dress // F21 socks // Threadsence boots

I have always avoided the bump ponytail.   I feel like I’m Lt. Jadzia Dax.  And if you know who I’m talking about, I love you!  If you don’t, well then…I’m a nerd and I’m talking about Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

I know it looks nothing like it, but that’s all I could think about every time I caught a glimpse of my face.  It was driving me a little crazy.  That’s why about two hours later, my hair was in a side french braid.  I just can’t do justice to the Dax!

These are the problems you face as a die-hard sci-fi fan.  Sometimes in your head it looks like you’re trying to be one of the characters.

Like when I wear a racerback tank I always feel like Starbuck.  But in those circumstances I don’t take it off.  Instead I say, “Frak yeah!  Let’s go toaster shopping!”
