Henry Rollins wrote a story about a couple having sex that is interrupted when she answers the phone. He wrote this moment:
Recently, I went to a play. *Not going to say which one, I’m not a TOTAL s**t, despite what you might think* And I sat at the back and watched the actors until I got bored.
Let’s face it, everywhere we look we have ads, or people’s highlight reels, or somebody enjoying something we want.
We all do it, we subscribe to the newsletter online, or in person at checkout. And then we’re bombarded with emails constantly showing us this deal or that deal or, “New arrivals selling out fast” and “Quick, you don’t want to miss this!”
Don’t try to do things alone. We’re not isolated creatures. Nor are we gods who can do anything. Get some help with your goals.
Changing others is a futile goal? You can’t change others. You can encourage behaviors, but you can’t force anyone into anything. You can however change yourself – to a certain extent, but I’m not going to get into the genetics of personality here.
We were talking about pleasure. You know what’s also pleasurable? Financial security. Some of us are more fiscally and financially motivated. We live in a culture of consumer debt. That does NOT mean this is a good thing. In fact, I read a statistic that says 46% Canadians are $200 away from insolvency. Not cool, guys. Not cool.
Knowing what drives you to shop is important because it helps to identify what you enjoy and what you don’t.
You’re doing your best; examining your behaviors, checking yourself, putting in safeguards, but then you buy something you didn’t mean to. Maybe you slipped emotionally, or fiscally. Whatever it happens.
Let’s start with the biggie: What drives you to shop? If you take away anything from me ever, it’s to always ask, “what’s driving you?”
