Plenty of Smiles

Shirt – AE
Pants – Esprit
Sunglasses – F21
Shoes – Payless

There were plenty of smiles this week!

1. The beautiful weather!
2.  The fact that my outfit photos get interrupted by a toddler standing right in front of the camera asking, “What’s this?” and going “uh-oh!” because it’s beeping.
3. Playing ‘fetch’ with both the dog and the baby! *another bad mother moment, but oh so funny!*

Decorate Not Dictate

Jacket – Old Navy
Dress – bought in Spain
Scarf – Lace Affair
Socks – F21
Boots – Threadsence
I did a great shoot a few days back with a really fun couple, and I’ve got some amazing photos to edit.  I wore this number to shoot and crawled, jumped, and climbed in it.  I’m not one to let a skirt, or a nice dress stop me from rolling in the mud if that’s what it takes to get a great shot.  I figure, as much as I love them, they’re just clothes.  They’re here to decorate my life, not dictate how I live it.
Speaking of those shots, the beautiful weather has delayed me in posting them, but I swear they’ll be up soon!

Flash Thanks

Top – Thrifted
Skirt – Spotted Moth
Cardi – Old Navy
Hat &Shoes – Ruche
Necklace – won from a giveaway and I can’t remember from who

Yesterday I had a really rough day,  I mean really rough.  I won’t go into the details because that’s not the pertinent part, but let’s just say I was not a happy camper.  Having money set aside for just such days, I tweeted that I needed one of my favorite stores to have a flash sale so I can partake of some retail therapy.  I didn’t really expect a response, you know?  Lo and behold, Lauren from Emerging Thoughts tweets and facebooks with a one hour flash sale in my honor.  I was touched!  *I also picked up a gorgeous Dear Creatures dress I was hoping to get*

We’re in the middle of Blog Positivity week and I can’t express how much I appreciate the relationships I’ve formed with some amazing people online.   Like Lauren from Emerging Thoughts.  She’s a wonderful lady with a great eye for curating her boutique, and a great personality all around.  I’ve never met her in person, only online.  Through blogs and social media,  I’ve made connections with bloggers, retailers and just great people all around.

I’d like to thank you all.

True Story:
Baby has grasped the full extent and meaning of the word ‘No’, or ‘neoo’ as she says it.
*accompanied by the obligatory head shake*
Here’s a recent conversation.
“Do you want to eat dinner?”
“Neoo”
“Okay, well Mama’s going to eat dinner.”
“Neoo”
“Do you want to go take a bath?”
“Neoo”
“Well, Mama has to go to the bathroom”
“Neoo!”
“No?”
“Neoo.”

At Home

Sweater & Leaf Necklace – F21
Birdcage Necklace – c/o This Enchanted Pixie
Boots – Locale
Dress – From Ruche (sold out). Similar from Lace Affair.

I sometimes long for that perfect uniform that defines me, finding something that is the perfect expression of who I am and how I wish to be perceived.  I’ve written before about how I feel like a wild swinging pendulum in that respect, but I’ve also realized that I do have an outfit, or combination, where I feel most comfortable.  It’s boots and a dress.  A great dress and a comfortable, and cool, pair of boots are when I feel most myself and most relaxed.  I think it’s the femininity and softness of a dress, combined with the laid-back ease of boots that appeals.  That’s where I feel most at home.
Jeans and a t-shirt come no where close to making me feel this comfortable.
I’d love to hear what combo makes you feel at home?

I Need To Get This Out Of My System

Sweater – thrifted
Skirt – Ruche
Leaf Necklace & Earrings – Ruche
Scarf – Le Chateau
Tights, Chain Necklace, & Socks – F21
Boots – Locale
Okay so pardon me while I dwell on something that isn’t really all that important.

See this skirt?  It arrived that morning and I immediately wore it even though it was wrinkled.  I was totally in love with it.  Then later that night I was steaming it and suddenly about halfway through the steaming process it melted a 5 inch hole right into it!  I was so completely bummed, I didn’t know what to do with myself!  I double checked the tag and it said nothing about iron low or anything like that – just hand wash cold, lay flat to dry’ – and I don’t have the fabric expertise to know how an item should be treated just by looking at it.  I’m just a dumb bum who screwed up. So that’s the story of how I have lost my new favorite skirt on the very first day I got it.  Yup, I’m really sad.

So if you get it, or you’ve got it, learn from me.  Iron or steam on super low with a cloth between the iron and the fabric.  Wish I’d known that before.

*yes, I know there are real problems in the world, even in my life, so I do realize how self-indulgent this being bummed about a skirt is. Hence the first line disclaimer.   That’s why I’m writing this post, getting it out of my system and moving on…or trying to*

Feminine And Strong

Top – Ruche
Blazer – F21
Jeans – Gap
Boots – Feet First
Necklace – c/o Scarlet Samples

I love that this blazer has such wonderful feminine lace detail.  It allows me to be classy and professional without relinquishing my frilly, feminine side.  It makes me think of how I want to be a woman: fully embracing my femininity while still being confident and strong.   It’s so wonderful when fashion can influence our attitude and put a boost in our self-assurance.
And on a side note, I’m so extremely pleased with this necklace I received a few weeks ago.  It works with so many outfits and has such an easy, natural beauty about it.  But here’s the best part, they sent me two!  One for me, and one for one of my lucky readers…yup, I’ve got a giveaway coming up real soon!

True Story:
Took Baby for a walk with Drake the Dog.
Drake squatted to poo.
Baby looked at him, squatted and grunted pretending to poo.
Yeah, I think I’m still laughing.

A Mess

Top – Wallis from The Bay
Jeans – Gap
Socks – CK
Shoes – Payless
Earrings – Threadsence
Since having a baby I’ve become a total wreck. Honestly, just ask Andrew.  We were watching an old episode of Numbers and it was about a little girl who’s kidnapped and held for ransom. Well, in the middle of the episode I started crying just thinking about the feeling of losing my baby or not being able to protect her.  I was crying so hard that Andrew had to stop the show and comfort me.   I wish I could say that this was a one time occurrence but it isn’t.  I’m just a mess!

p.s. I’d love it if you could take two minutes to vote for ModaMama here – no sign-ups or logins required.  Thank you so much!

True Story:
Baby climbed into our laundry hamper, sat down and closed the lid on herself.
Ok, sure.

Hidden Treasures

Sweater – Gap

Dress – c/o eShakti
Shoes -Locale
Tights – F21

Lately I find myself browsing Etsy more and more.  I’m longing for the handmade, the special, the unique and Etsy is where I can find it.  But even there a lot of the things look the same, or very similar, and I find myself once more trying to find the unique and the special amidst all these handmade pieces.  It sometimes feels overwhelming and I have to step away and withdraw from the on flux of materials and colors, but sometimes if I persevere I can find my way to gems like This Enchanted Pixie. I love this collection of handmade pieces – they’re full of whimsy and a free spirited feeling.  This necklace makes me think of walking on the beach on a cool day and hearing the waves crash, while this one makes me remember strolling down the side streets of Paris with a macaron in hand.  These treasures are why I always make my way back to Etsy, like a friend full of inspiration, it’s always there.

True Story:
Baby’s new favorite game?
Putting dog food down the heating vent.
Anytime we turn our backs or walk out of the room, there she is at it again.
Poor Drake scratches at the vent.

Colors, Oh My!

Sweater – hand me down
Belt & Tights – F21
Dress – Ruche
Shoes – Payless
Bag – Aldo
Earrings – c/o  This Enchanted Pixie

I received these amazing earrings from This Enchanted Pixie along with a necklace and planned an outfit around both pieces *you’ll see that soon*, but they’re just so amazing that I couldn’t resist sneaking them into this outfit first.  I’m so glad I did!  Not only did I receive two compliments on them, but they feel so great on that I just felt like I had a little something extra, you know?  Personally, I think that these yellow ones are just too cute for words, so I suggest you grab them and rock them!

Bright colors are so hot for winter.  They’re no longer reserved just for Spring and Summer, and I’m so thankful because, as you can tell, I can’t resist a bold splash of color in the middle of a grey and cold February. I think what I like most about it is that it’s unexpected.  Not many expect to see such bright colors especially in downtown Toronto in a business district.  I know I turned a few heads because of that, but hopefully I brought at least a smile to one.

True Story:
Baby pulled out a bag of baby carrots from the fridge, and methodically bit into each and every one.
Then handed each and every one to me.
She expects them to be soft – like when cooked – and had a puzzled expression on her face as to why they were hard and crunchy.

Summer Brights

Scarf – street stand; Sweater & Jeans – Gap; Boots – Locale; Bracelet – thrifted.

Winter has hit us hard!  It makes me want to curl up in warm sweaters and cozy scarves – so I’m just going with that instinct.  It takes a lot to get me out of dresses, but a wind chill factor that makes it feel inhuman outdoors will definitely do it.  Though not for long!

Some people think that winter has to mean you put away your bright summer things, but I don’t agree with that.  I wear sundresses, pastels and brights colors all year long.  It’s a matter of layering and co-ordinating.  I think most of the old rules, like what ‘goes’ with what, are out.  There’s appropriate clothing, like don’t wear a bright sundress to a funeral, but as far as hard set rules, like no white shoes after labour day, I think they’re pretty much out the window.  It’s all about good styling, with that you can break any fashion rule!

On a silly sartorial note – I have have to recycle the same outfit for three days! *not in a row at least* You see, for callbacks you have to wear the same thing you wore to the original audition – so two callbacks later, I’m still wearing the same stuff.  But at least I’ve booked one so far!  Keep your eyes on your tv!

True Story:
Andrew was away for five nights on a business trip.  So Drake the Dog slept on the bed on Andrew’s spot.  The first night after Andrew came back we’re in bad and Drake is standing by Andrew’s side and starting at him like, “Dude get outta my place.”
Andrew didn’t move.
Neither did Drake.
Then he whined.
*the dog not the husband*
Nothing.
Then he made a sound that was part growl, part whine, part pout, and all cute.
Andrew caved and took him into bed…for a while at least.
