Necessity Is The Mother Of Invention

Sweater – Gap; Dress – H&M; Belt – F21; Tights – Hue; Boots – Threadsence; Leg Warmers – Legs Beautiful.

I don’t have snow boots.  I should, I live in Canada after all where the snow falls and the temperature drops below what I consider human.  But I don’t.  And it’s not because I’m too cool for them or anything.  It’s because two winters ago mine died.  Then last winter I was pregnant and didn’t want to spend a ton of money when I wasn’t sure what my feet were doing *feet can change size during pregnancy* This winter…well let’s just say there’s been some belt tightening ’round these here parts.

So I made a thrown together, DIY pair.  What are snow boots?  Waterproof boots with a warm lining.  So I  took a  loose pair of boots that’s waterproof, put on warm legwarmers and shoved it all into said boots.  And voila!  Snow boots!  These will do until looser pants reign supreme.

p.s.  I’m writing over here today about the trials and tribulations of blog/website design.

Vintage Shoot

Cardi – thrifted; Top – Urbanog.com; Pants – Lululemon, Boots – ?

I did a really fun shoot today all styled in 50s or 60s vintage.  It was a publicity shoot for Victoria Murdoch‘s new one woman fringe festival show.   It was a great impromptu shoot organized in under three days, scrounged together through various talent and resources, including the spectacular Jessica Jean Myers – hair and make-up artist extraordinaire – and shot by yours truly.  Can’t wait to show you guys the finished product.   In the meantime, check out a behind-the-scenes shot of Jessica doing Victoria’s hair:

Normally I don’t say where these come from, but today I have to own up.
This was me.
Non-chalantly.
Over breakfast.

And Now Back To You

Top & Dress – F21; Cardi – Smart Set; Shoes – Payless.

Some days I just don’t have a lot to say about things.  Shocking I know.  I’ve been crazy busy organizing things and working on stuff, so I haven’t really had a lot of time to reflect. The only thing I have to say is that I love mixing prints.  It’s something I’ve never experimented with before and now I’m addicted.

But right now, I’m gonna turn it over to you.  Tell me what you’re pondering today.

Just in case you weren’t aware, all four legged creatures are “how how”  (dog barking) and all birds are “Qua Qua” (ducking quacking).
At least according to Baby.

Are My Politics Showing?

Vest – AE; Top & Necklace – F21; Pants – swapped; Pants – Feet First; Bag – Matt by Matt&Nat.

I don’t usually get political here on the blog, but I have to voice my dismay at our Mayor elect.  He is tearing our city apart at the seams, but I digress.  The issue I specifically want to address is the child care subsidy that he’s hoping to get rid off.  Families already struggle with mounting child care costs and to slash even more funding is unfathomable to me.  These are the future citizens, leaders, thinkers, and business people of our country and you want to cut how well we *as a community* raise them?  So not only will we raise dumb people to lead our country, but we’ll also make sure that the current citizens are stressed and overworked *or kept below the poverty line* by the lack of affordable child care.  Go mayor! *sarcasm fully intended*

True Story:
Yay!  My package from Ruche finally came!  I’m really hatin’ on Canada Post.  These two shipments were unreasonably delayed and took twice as long as any other shipment – from anywhere, even Hong Kong.  Seriously, what up Canada Post?  You made me so sad thinking I would have to stop shopping online *read “at Ruche”*

Lots Of Things Start Early…Like My Day

Cardi – Costa Blanca; Top – Urbanog.com; Jeans – Gap; Boots – Feet First.

Happy Monday beautiful people!  I’m working off of several cups of tea since Baby is still keeping us up at all hours of the night.  I really don’t know what’s up.  Maybe teething, maybe not.  I really can’t tell.  I am, however, proud to say that we’ve made the transition to one nap a day very easily and very smoothly.

And yet again, I didn’t want to wash my hair so I stuck it up in this french braid thing-y.  It’s what I do.  What do you do when you don’t want to wash/do your hair?  Leave a comments and share.  Thanks!

True Story:
I knew I would have a fashionista on my hands…I just didn’t think it would start this early!

A Dinner Seven Years In The Making

Dress – Ruche; Shoes – Aldo; Belt – H&M.

As you know, I’m a polka dot fiend, but recently I’ve been loving the color red, so this dress was a perfect combination of an old obsession with a burgeoning new one.  And it’s comfortable too.  Oh and a tip, it packs well.  No creases what-so-ever.

So, Dinner was at the local music pub.  Not a fancy place, but one with a cool vibe and a live blue-grass player.  He had gray dreadlocks. Can we say cool A-ttitude

During dinner we had wondered what to do afterwards, but Mother Nature made the decision for us by providing a torrential downpour that made us quickly go back to the hotel room where we watched a movie and ate decadent chocolate! Mmmmm…chocolate…with cookies crumbs.

True Story:
Never give your child oatmeal with fresh blueberries while she’s wearing a white shirt…and insists on feeding herself.
*le sigh*

Polka Dot Ramblings And A Winner Announced

Dress – Ruche or Modcloth;  Belt – F21; Shoes – Payless.

Can I just say that I love polka dots?  I think I’m completely obsessed with them.  Anything I see with polka dots grabs my attention and won’t let go.  So when I saw this dress a while back I was in love.  And it wasn’t just the dots, it was the fact that it was such a timeless shape.  Though to be fully honest, I didn’t like my hair after I saw these shots and decided to throw it up in a pony before heading out.
I need a haircut.

True Story:
Yesterday I made myself a shake and once I had turned on the blender I turned around to check on Baby, who’s usually afraid of the thing, only to find her….dancing!  She was dancing to the whirring.  Kids are funny.

Standing Out In A Sea Of Beauty

Top – Ruche; Maxi – Spotted Moth; Booties – Aldo.

A friend and I were recently talking about beauty.  We were discussing the prevalence of a certain standard of beauty in society and the pressure we both feel to live up to it, and the fact that we both deviate from said standard in highly “negative” ways.  So it’s kind of interesting that in the September issue of Flare magazine (a Canadian fashion magazine) there was a whole reader survey about beauty, standards, and pressures.

Us Canucks had some interesting things to say:
The images we see on the internet, and social networking sites on a daily basis heighten our expectations of beauty and perfection in ourselves.  This sets the bar higher and higher for ourselves, and we feel a pressure to live up to it daily.  And while most of us have a dissatisfaction with our body shape and weight, overall we feel beautiful.

Do you agree?

This sort of goes along with what my friend and I were talking about.  The prevalence of amazing photos, and such a huge assortment of beautiful women makes both of us feel we have to live up to some unachievable bar of beauty.

Do you struggle with weight and body image?  Do you feel beautiful?  In such a menagerie of beauty, how do you stand out?

Just a side note since we’re talking about photos, I’ve been just using curves and color balance exclusively in my photos recently.  So how do you like it?

Simple Bliss

Husband was smirking at me.  What?

Hat&Glasses – F21; Dress – AE; Flip Flops – Abercrombie&Fitch.

We went for a walk while the day was still cool.  Which it isn’t a lot these days.  We’ve got Baby sleeping in our room in her playpen since it’s the only room in the house where the AC fits in the windows.  So the whole family now sleeps there – Me, Husband, Baby, and Drake the Dog.

Getting back to our walk…Drake the Dog had a great time running around with Husband.

Then he had fun chasing the Canada Geese around.  Don’t worry, he’s too slow to ever catch one.

And finally,  I’m sort of glad to be back because I’ve really missed this little munchkin!

True Story:  I made breakfast this morning for me and Baby (Husband was doing a night shift).  Baby ended up eating everything!   Two huge pieces of multigrain bread, and all of my scrambled eggs!

Laughing At Myself

My sister caught me as I tripped and was not-at-all-graceful.

Dress & Belt – F21; Sandals – Zellers.

I can’t help but laugh when I trip and generally act clumsy.  It happens to me a lot, so I’ve learned to embrace that particular character trait and I’ve even come to love it a bit.  It’s what makes me who I am.  I can be all poise and grace, until I fall over my own feet.  And I don’t even try to act like nothing happened.  It’s just too funny not to laugh.
