Wearing My Walkin’ Hat

Hat – Ruche; Skirt as dress – on the beach in Barcelona; Belt – F21; Shoes – Zellers.

Here’s why I love fashion:  You can be endlessly creative with it.  You can nip, tuck, pin, twist, tie, belt, and loop to you hearts content and create an ever varying assortment of outfits.  And one of my fave things is the miraculous ability of maxi skirts to become dresses just by nipping a belt around your waist.

And though you’re probably tired of seeing my summer staples – large sunglasses and a wide brim hat – I’m loving them.  Sun protection hound that I am, I wear both these things and SPF 45 on my face.  What can I say?  I rock the pasty white look.

True Story:
Drake the Dog lying asleep on the couch.  Baby comes over and I expect her to smack him or poke him, but what does she do instead?  She leans in real close and puts her little nose right up against his and just stares at him.
For a really long time.
Then she pokes him.
Still, it’s an improvement.

Diaper Whisperer At Your Service

Hat – gift from Husband; Dress – Covet; Belt – from this Ruche dress; Shoes – Payless; Purse – Matt by Matt&Nat.

I got this Covet number just a little while ago and it’s quickly becoming a favorite.  It’s so light and breathable, but so versatile in the styling possibilities as well.  I’m already dreaming up outfits for fall around this piece.  And I love how you can change the feel of an outfit by adding a different belt.  I removed the one that came with the dress and added a relaxed woven belt and it gave the whole look a new feel.  I’m also thinking of wearing this dress with a bright wide belt soon – just to play and see what happens.

True Story:
Recently Baby had a poo just after she fell asleep for the night.  I couldn’t leave her in it all night – that would be very bad for her sensitive baby skin.  So I had to change it.  I was resigned to the fact that I would wake her in the process, but still had hope.
So I first opened and laid out the new diaper nearby, and prepped a wipe.  Then I gingerly undid the old diaper and lifted it ever so delicately off her.  I gently wiped her.  And then came the tricky part.
I had to lift her bum up in the air to place the new diaper under her.  As I did that she rolled over.  So then I had to roll her over onto her back again, but as I did so I placed the diaper in place at the same time.
Quickly put two tabs in place and literally pounced out of the room as she stirred and re-adjusted.
Then I did a little silent fist pump dance to Husband.
I AM THE DIAPER WHISPERER!!!!

Hot Town, Summer In The City

Hat – Ruche; Glasses – F21; Dress – Ruche; Shoes – Payless.

It’s 49 here in Toronto.  We’re supposed to be at the tail end of a heat wave, and tomorrow the weather’s supposed to drop down ten degrees.  Supposed to.  Early this morning the whole fam went for a walk, and since then we’ve dunked Baby in her pool and hung out in the master bedroom *the only place with an AC*
That’s where Baby has been sleeping too.

But I must say this dress is perfect for the heat.  The material feels heavy, but because it’s cotton and linen the whole thing breathes.  Ahhhhh….  And a wide brim hat and big sunglasses are my summer essentials!  that and SPF 60.

True Story:
Baby took a dump today in her pool.
Yes, yes she did.

Simple Bliss

Husband was smirking at me.  What?

Hat&Glasses – F21; Dress – AE; Flip Flops – Abercrombie&Fitch.

We went for a walk while the day was still cool.  Which it isn’t a lot these days.  We’ve got Baby sleeping in our room in her playpen since it’s the only room in the house where the AC fits in the windows.  So the whole family now sleeps there – Me, Husband, Baby, and Drake the Dog.

Getting back to our walk…Drake the Dog had a great time running around with Husband.

Then he had fun chasing the Canada Geese around.  Don’t worry, he’s too slow to ever catch one.

And finally,  I’m sort of glad to be back because I’ve really missed this little munchkin!

True Story:  I made breakfast this morning for me and Baby (Husband was doing a night shift).  Baby ended up eating everything!   Two huge pieces of multigrain bread, and all of my scrambled eggs!

In A New York Frame Of Mind

Hat & Ring – Ruche; Top, Sandal & Shorts – F21; Belt – H&M.

Top of the mornin’ to you.  I’m up bright and early, too early for my tastes, but as every Mother knows it’s not up to my tastes.  And last night marks the last time I’m going to sleep in my bed until next Sunday.  I’m New York bound!  Heading over to my sister’s place tonight.  so for the next while I’ll be posting from NYC.

I’ve been there a few times.  So here’s the question:  any hidden gems that I should check out?  Anything secret you’ve discovered that you’re willing to share with me?  See you in New York.

Underwear Undercover

At the Movieola Studio in between segments.

Hat – F21; Shirt and belt – thrifted; Skirt – Spotted Moth; Shoes – Payless.

It’s summer and everyone is shedding layers.  But the warm months have exposed a terrible thing I’ve been witnessing on the street – bad underwear choices.  Outfits are 360 degrees.  The world sees us all the way around and not just from the front or side.  And not every outfit goes with with multicolored tight undies.  I’ve seen the underwear abuse everywhere lately.  The reason it gets me so adamant is that it ruins an otherwise cute outfit.  Further, it makes the offending lady look a little trashy, unkempt, and makes her figure look less beautiful.

Consider this, a young mom was walking down the street ahead of me pushing a stroller. She had a cute messy ponytail going for her, a figure that, though not sports illustrated material *but really who is, am I right??* , was quite attractive, and she had a simple and sweet maxi dress on. *which I love for new moms in the summer*  So she could’ve had everything going for her.  Except.  She had tight orange underwear on.  How do I know it was orange?  Because it showed through her dress.  How did I know it was tight?  Because it was cutting into her bum, legs, and hips.  So the whole cute image, and the long lean line of the dress, was ruined.  It’s the details that separate chic from not.  And it’s important to consider your outfit from the top layer to the bottom.

If you’re a mom, don’t wear a black bra with a white top. *this is a trend I see on teenage girls today, and in my opinion it just looks cheap on anyone*  Don’t wear tight orange underwear with a slightly sheer jersey dress.  Soft thongs are great, as are seamless panties.  And the mantra is nude, nude, nude!  If you’re wearing an outfit like the one I am above, where there’s volume and the skirt is fully lined you can wear any underwear you like – mine are dark grey bikini style, by the way.  And most importantly make sure it fits.

Okay, that’s it.
Rant over.
Thank you for listening.
I’m here all week.  Please remember to tip your waitress.

One Of The Boys

Hat – Zellers; Scarf – thrifted; Tank – F21; Jeans – AE; Flip Flops – Abercrombie&Fitch.

As much as I love being girlie with frills, ruffles, lace, and flowers, I also love the look and feel of boyfriend jeans.   There’s something very ‘Sunday’ about a good ol’ pair of boyfriend jeans. I love to just throw on a pair like the ones pictured above and head out for a stroll around the neighborhood.  Sometimes we go to the park and swing. Baby loves that!

Another recent *typically boy* obsession?  “Top Gear”!  I’m crazy about it.  The guys who host are hilarious and soooo not PC, and the cars are just completely drool worthy!  I can’t get enough of it…it’s a problem.

Busy Little Bee

My manicure!  I’m so proud.

Hat – Ruche; Shirt – H&M; Jeans – Guess; Sandals – Zellers.

I must say it’s been a busy and rough week, and it’s not going to stop until I leave for NYC next Monday.  I’ve been doing crazy on-air hours and shoots in between.  So it’s a good busy, but still tiring.  Have to say though, that Baby is getting sooooo much better at sleeping through the night.  I’m really loving it.  I just wish I could take more advantage of it by being in bed earlier.

Anyway, I hope you lovlies had a great long weekend.  And for you stylish ladies who asked about my hair, the tutorial is coming up soon!  Sometime this week, I swear.

Showing Your Colors

Hat – Ruche; Dress & Belt – H&M; Shoes – Payless; Earrings – independent artisan.

For us Canadians yesterday was a great day; we celebrated the birth of our nation.  While many people had bbqs with friends and then watched the fireworks, I chose to wear our national colors *red and white* on air while I hosted Movieola.  Our friends south of the border have Independence Day coming up, so tell me, how are you going to celebrate? And for you Canucks, how did you spend Canada Day?

On a side note, I played the BSG board game for the first time yesterday, and it’s so much fun!  I think I’m going to buy my own copy on the way to work today!  So much fun trying to figure out who’s a cylon!

Nearest And Dearest

Hat – Ruche; Dress – F21; Shoes – Payless.

I had a whole outfit planned for today.  But Baby had her first vaccinations yesterday and so now she’s got a full blown fever.  All she does is sleep, lay with me on the couch and drink water.  So, that’s the end of any plans I had.  It’s all about her and comforting her through this time.

She’s napping again right now, so I’m taking this opportunity to post some shots from a few days back *’cause currently I’m wearing shorts and a tank top with spit-up on it*. This dress is actually a little too short for me to wear in public with my head held high, so I’m shortening it into a really fun button up blouse.  I love the pattern waaay too much to give up on it!

You know, I talk a lot about being a Mom and still holding on to fashion and style.  And I mean every word of it!  Fashion is about self expression, creativity, and fun.  It isn’t, however, the nearest and dearest thing to my heart.  So, when my darling is sick, or feverish from shots, it’s about comforting her and loving her.

So peace out all you lovlies!  I’m gonna go be ‘Mama.’
