I read a fabulous article about Ralph Lauren hiring plus size model Robyn Lawley for their next clothing campaign. Now I say fabulous, not because the article itself was a piece of mastery in literature, or because this hallmarks some revolution in the idealization of the female form, but because it’s another small step.
The article critiques the move by Ralph Lauren as a publicity tactic and not some grand shift in the thinking fashion industry elites. While that may be true, and I am always highly suspect of a companies motives in anything they do, I do applaud the move none the less.
True, plus size models are still perfectly proportioned, and photoshopped to elicit an unattainable female image of perfect skin, teeth, and hair, just like the article claims. But I argue that the revolution to change female ideals is a process. It’s won one battle at a time. I consider this a win.
Sure, she’s gorgeous *unattainbly so* and still small *I would hesitate call her “plus size”* but she is a step away from the waifish prepubescent girls we see gracing the covers of magazines. And I can get behind that.
Leaving the checkout, I notice the lady in the next aisle looking at Baby Girl snacking on a single serving bag of chips shaking her head. She then looks at me with a dirty look. Totally ticks me off when women judge each other’s ability to mother. Lady, what do you know?
Yes, maybe once a month Baby Girl gets a single serving of chips all to herself. There is nothing wrong with that. And perhaps, you should compare our shopping carts before you shake your head at me.
Mine: Kale, beets, cucmber, avocado, mixed nuts, bananas, almond milk, rice ice cream, apples, lemons, fresh chicken breasts, drumsticks, bag of basmati rice, cashew butter, eggs.
Hers: McCain frozen meal, Frozen pizza, white wonder bread, big hunk of cheese, bag of cookies, sandwich meat, some frozen cooked meat, ketchup, lettuce, tomatoe.
I wasn’t judging you before *because I just don’t care* but I certainly am now.
You know what they say about people who live in glass houses right?
Don’t be throwin’ no s@#t around!
Playing with different trends and styles. Experimenting with different perceptions of self and different sides of various aesthetics. These are the things I love about fashion.
But there’s also something serenely and peacefully perfect about a homecoming. A homecoming to that outfit that best defines you. An outfit that really reflects to the world who you are at your core. The outfit that feels just like the worn in jeans, a cup of hot chocolate, or that home cooked meal your mama made.
A floral dress, jean jacket and boots. That’s my fashion chicken soup. It just doesn’t get any better.
This is me world.
Style and fashion is all about how you feel, and your attitude. It doesn’t matter how gorgeous the clothing or how expensive the accessories. It’s all in the swagger and the way you carry yourself. That’s why when looking at these pictures I can’t convey to you that even though this outfit is so fun, exactly what I wanted, and I like it in the pictures, I didn’t like it in person. That day I was missing the swagger. The ‘tude eluded me and left me wanting.
That day, I feel the clothes were wearing me. That’s my fault, not the clothes. My mistake was that I didn’t listen to my feelings and instead went with what I had decided in my head. I wanted to wear the dress, which I love, but I was stubborn and didn’t pay attention to my gut.
Fashion is feeling.
Mama’s not paying attention. She’s busy celebrating and doing a happy dance in thanks for all the wonderful readers she has. So I’ve taken over the blog! Yippee!!
Sincerely,
Baby Girl
