1950’s Propaganda Poster

Romper – Honey Punch  //  Tank – Jacob  //  Hat – no label  //  Sweater –  Love Stitch //  Necklace – ModCloth  //  Turquoise bracelet – H&M  // Turquoise & Silver bracelet – unknown  //  Shoes & Sunnies – F21
I only buy cheap sunglasses.  Why?  Because I break them all the time.  I’m just cruel to them.  So of course, when mine broke the day before because I rudely shoved them to the bottom of my purse, I had to get a new pair.  I branched out a bit and went with aviators, and I’ll tell you why.
I wore an almost exact version of this outfit a few days back, and one man said to me, “You look like a 1950’s propaganda poster…but in a good way.”  With this on my brain, it seemed that the only sunglasses I could buy was a pair of cool aviators.  Now I’m so glad I did.  Aviators rock.

Garbage Meltdowns

Dress – Ruche  //  Jacket – Old Navy  //  Necklace & Hat – F21  //  Boots – Feet First
A box arrived for my husband.  Inside there was an item – which is not relevant for our purposes – that was packed with that styrofoam popcorn stuff.  Baby Girl saw this and wanted to play with it desperately.  Us, being the ever diligent parents aware of choking hazards and other things, said, “No, honey.  It’s garbage.”  At which point, while Andrew went out to throw it in the garbage, I was left with a tantrum induced toddler screaming repeatedly at the top of her lungs, ” I want garbage!”
Not moments later all was right with the world and she was happily prancing about again.  Ah, the unpredictable pendulum that is the 2 year old psyche.

Two Pairs of Shoes

Dress – English Rose *from Ruche, I think*  //  Clutch – H&M  //  Shoes – Call It Spring

I went to the launch party of a historic event in Canada – the Independent Web Series Creator’s of Canada.  It was an absolutely great time, and if you’re in Canada you want to be a part of this organization.  So here I am all dressed up for the night.  I love how easy and loose this dress is.  Plus, I’m really loving mint green right now.

But here’s the real story I want to share with you.  In that clutch you see right at this very moment hides a pair of flats.  See I plan ahead.  After hours and hours in these gorgeous pink heels my feet were killing me.  I wasn’t about to spend time traveling home in pain.

As I rode the metro, I was accompanied by three teenagers who were out for the night too.  The young woman was leaning on her boyfriend because her feet hurt from her shoes.  He turned to her, just as I was passing them on the stairs, and said, “Why don’t you girls bring two pairs of shoes when you go out?”  Then as I passed I knew he pointed at me, and so I turned around and gave them a knowing smile while I gestured to the heels hanging off my fingers.

Yup, it’s  all about the two pairs of shoes.

Raw Kale and Toddlers

Our friends call us the Hippie parents.  And I always wonder why exactly.  Sure we grow veggies in our garden, eat organic, gluten and dairy free as well.  And no we don’t stress over her eating dirt or kissing the dog; germs are good for her immunity.  But here’s what explained things for me.
I was busy juicing veggie juice for all of us.  I turned around to see Baby Girl standing and munching on the raw kale from the bowl of veggies prepped for juicing.  She was happily eating away and smiling at me.  I smiled back and started juicing.  Then she got upset because I juiced her ‘snack’ *that’s what she called it*  Juicing veggies, and a girl who gets upset when you take away her raw kale?  Yup, we’re hippie parents all right.  If by ‘hippie’ you mean kick ass awesome! Come on, a toddler who eats raw kale and likes it?!  That’s got to be some kind of achievement.

Occupy Winter

Top -Kensie  //  Button up – Hand me down  //  Pants – F21  //  Zebra Necklace – Lustre in Montreal //
Gold&Black Necklace – Kenya via One Thousand Villages  //  Ring – don’t remember
There’s new growth and sunshine, and though my heart does not rise with it yet, my brain knows it’s only a matter of time before the warmth and light of the sun push aside the dark and dreary nooks of the spirit left by the grey of Winter, and take up permanent residence.  Until such time, the softness of loose cotton, raw silks, and soft knits will keep me company and blur the hard lines.

Sexy Woman Day

Dress – Zara //  Tights – HUE  //  Boots – Feet First  //  Belt – F21  //  Earrings – Gift  //  Bag – Ruche
More office wear coming at you.  I snagged this dress at a super end of season sale a few years back, and I love the way it makes me feel like I’m a stylish ’70s woman.  It’s conservative and yet still fun.  Plus, who doesn’t love a gold belt?   Again, I loved the looks in the office elevator.  It’s either my staggering beauty or the fact that these people have never seen color and pattern before.  Let’s go with the beauty theory.  If we’re going for grand delusions, I say we go for the really satisfying ones.  So today, we’re all Sophia Loren!
In honor of this self proclaimed Sophia Loren day, might I suggest donning some sexy lipstick, a foxy dress and some fun shoes as you go about your day?  Even if you’re stuck in a cubicle, or stuck changing diapers – let’s get our sexy woman on today.
*Wow, that is not where I saw this post going!*

Swirling

  Sweater – Pink Martini  //  Top – Threadsence  //  Jeans – Gap  //  Boots – Locale  //  Necklace – Ruche  //  Earrings – Ten Thousand Villages
Today is one of those days where there are so many thoughts swirling about my head that I can’t seem to pick out one in order to focus on it.  I wish I could pluck one out and share it with you.  Instead, all I have for you are these pictures.
p.s.  A couple of you have asked about how to get this hair.  Well, it’s really the result of wearing this Easy Headband Updo in for a whole day.
True Story:
Baby Girl has decided to help me with my boots the way I help her, by holding them out for me to put my foot into.
She insists on it and won’t let me do it myself.
But because she’s two what that really means is I spend 10 minutes hopping around on one leg trying to catch the ever moving boot opening.

Dressember Week Three Link Up

Dress – ModCloth  //  Cardi – H&M  //  Tights – HUE
Boots – Feet First  //  Necklace and Belt – F21
It may be sweet dressing, but I am drawn to big classic floral dresses like this one.  Perhaps my own biting and sarcastic mind is starving to create some sort of balance.  Or perhaps it’s a soft exterior designed to fool and lull into submission.   Whatever the reason, this is the exterior.
Now, let’s see how week three of Dressember went for you.  Link up your post, FB pic or twitter pic.  I’d love to see how things went.  And of course, a link back or button display is much appreciated.

Return To My Roots

Dress – ModCloth  //  Sweater, Necklace & Belt – F21  //  Tights – Hue  //  Shoe – Clarks
Coat – Jacob  //  Scarf – Urban Outfitters  //  Mitts – Walmart
Sometimes words come from my lips unbidden and like a honeyed sea of witty sarcasm full of revelations and various other profundities.  Other days, like today, my mind is a discombobulated mess of rhythms, thoughts, and emotions all pulling me in different directions.  So pardon my lack of eloquence as I say that:
a) It was very windy and cold, yet I felt light and warm throughout.
b) Today I shucked my recent boho style and was drawn to the more ladylike side of my closet that has remained hidden of late.
c) I like the way a silky, satin dress feels against my skin as the wind plays with it on a cold day.
d) Yes, I realize that by eloquently stating my lack of eloquence I am indeed proving myself a bald faced liar.

Bend But Not Break

Sweater – Pink Martini  //  Skirt – Ark&Co  // Boots – Feet First  //  Tights – Hue
Bracelets & Necklace – F21

Though breezy, flowy skirts and pastels are reminiscent of Spring and the bright sunshine of Summer, I can’t seem to hide them away in a dark corner of my closet when the temperatures drop.  The soft pale material feels so vulnerable in the bitter cold wind, but it does not break, so perhaps there’s a hidden strength in it somewhere.
Or maybe I just like to wax poetic about something that is really a simple sartorial choice.
It’s probably that.
Yes, definitely.
