Hope in Exhaustion: A Sartorial Discussion

It seems these pants are being worn with white tops and buns.  But I swear it’s accidental.  What they are really worn with is exhaustion.  Exhaustion is the motivator, and it just so happens that exhaustion goes with white tops – less to think about – and buns – less to do.

Plus a warm sweater, ’cause it’s chilly.  Really exhaustion.  But this goes to show * I hope* that being an exhausted mother, with a husband away on a business trip so no help, doesn’t mean you can’t have some modicum of style.

*Again… I hope*

The Numbers Drop

The ability to throw on a dress and hat and go out the door.  That’s the beauty that is summer, and warm weather in general.  I’m really going to miss this beautiful ability as the temperature drops.  It’s going to be about smart layering to maximize warmth as opposed to the ease and freedom to run out the door on a whim.

Summer, we’ve parted too soon.

Intentionally MIA

Being a little MIA last week was intentional.  With my girl off to school for the first full week ever, I wanted to take as much time for myself as possible.  To be honest, I want to do as much of that this week too, but life goes on so I’ll have to do some work after all.

I would drop her off, come home, and then stand in the house wondering what to do with myself.  Cups of tea, and a Sons of Anarchy marathon it was!  Plus, I’ve been playing some computer games that I bought but have never gotten around to….until now.

Yup, things aren’t too bad.  This week has a to do list, but I’m going to tackle it slowly.

How’s your week been?

Unexpected Biking Gear

As the weather inevitably turns, biking becomes  a bit of a challenge because though it’s warm when I leave, it’s chilly when I return home in the evening.  But it’s that weird cold where it’s not fully cold, just chilly, and definitely not warn.  These gauntlets from Jennifer Fukushima really have been great for biking.  They keep my hands and wrists nice and cozy, which is a very hard part to keep warm as I tend to have cold extremities, without feeling overheated.

Bonus points because it’s made in Canada, sustainability preference when sourcing material, and mostly natural fibers!  Jennifer is launching a whole new collection of clothing this Fall too – completely based around this social consciousness – showcasing her unique design aesthetic.

I Want Simple

Simple life.  Simple style. Simple schedule.  True, that most of the time I fail to achieve that ‘simple’ in life.  Most of the time, I’m such an overachiever that I feel miserable if I’m juggling less than three *metaphorical* balls at a time.  Most of the time I can hardly wrap my head around what our week looks like, much less our month.  But I feel that this idea of boho- not the over done, over accessorized, over priced boho – this idea of loose, easy and simple fits with me.  Fits with what I would ideally like to achieve.

A romper, a hat, some booties…and away we go juggling.

Mom Style

What is it?  Really?  To me, mom style is the style of a woman who happens to be a mom.  I know to some it means dowdy, or haphazard.  But I disagree.  How did we women get to be moms?  By being hot, and attractive…because let’s think a moment about how one becomes pregnant.  Think on that for a moment.

Now that you’ve thought about it.

I believe it’s a misnomer to think that once one has a child one has to suddenly forget that you have curves and sex appeal.  Yes, there are the pressures of time and the constraints given to thinking about style.  But jeans, a fun top, and great hat would solve any and all such occasional time constraints, would they not?

Those are my two cents for the day.

Weakness For Boats, and Other Sartorial Elements

As a preteen and teen I spent a lot of time on the water, sailing.  It was the thing that I would do practically every weekend in decent weather.  I studied knots, and techniques, and radio regulations, etc. etc.  While I don’t do that now, I do have a severe weakness for a good boat print.  When it’s a sailboat print on a blue dress with ruffles, it’s pretty much three weaknesses in one.

While away it was a pure joy to run down this country road.  It was long and hilly with lots of great farms along the way, and I was able to just not think and run while listening to Tina Fey’s Bossypants. Whenever I turned off the main road and saw this tiny little shed, I knew my run was really starting.  It marked the first third of my planned mileage and this is when I felt I could really open up.  On the way back, the shed gave me hope that I was but a mere third from home and yes, I really could do this.  So you see, either way it has some great feelings attached to it already.

I  made a mental note to come back on a walk and take some outfit shots along my favorite country lane and tiny shed.

I’ll miss you.

Troll Bridge

The camp we were recently at had a whole bunch of these fun bridges over little creeks and flood areas.  My girl had a great time pretending to be the grumpy old troll on the bridge.  She would make me give her hugs and kisses to cross – not a toll I mind paying!  I on the other hand, had a fun time posing on them. Swinging on them was fun too! *check instagram for that shot*

For a period of time, my style was all about minimalism.  Black and grey dominated my closet so much it was a bit of a joke among friends.  Clearly those days are over.  To be fair, they only lasted a handful of years, for prior to that I was all about bold and audacious clothing as well.

In high school I loved wearing things that were unexpected, but uniquely me.  I also had a period of time where my style icon was Drew Barrymore from Mad Love.  I even got a perm and cut my hair like her.  *Nope. No pictures exist from that golden era.  Thank Goodness!*

In the last several years I’ve gotten back to that bolder and more unexpected style of dressing.  I think it’s because I don’t like being told what to do or how to dress.  And I like a little bit of that shock value in clothing that is not quite what you would assume to see.

Maybe I just like rocking the boat a bit.
Maybe more than a bit.
