Gotta say, I love Mondays.  I know most people who have a 9-5 hate them, but I love them.  All through my life I’ve been a freelancer or shift worker, and the fields that I work in have usually been most active on weekends.  So for me, the weekend usually meant work. Monday meant rest.

Now, Mondays are an extra long day for my girl as she has Spanish class right after kindergarten.  So now, Mondays are a big day of free space.  Space for work, for productivity, for a pamper day if I need it.  Mondays are full of opportunity.

Predictable and Fun Coffee Date

Another nice fall day meant that I could get out with my girl to a coffee date.  She of course had her croissant, and I had my coffee.  Then came the requisite visit to the playground.  It’s a predictable pattern, but I missed it.  This was one of the things I wanted to get back to.

We have fun. She loves talking to the lovely people who work at SuperCoffee, even though she gets all shy.  My girl and I have great conversations over coffee and croissant, and then she has a blast sliding down the big kid slide at the park.  Perfect.

Briefly and Quickly Before It’s Gone

Well, despite ranting and raving the weather has started to turn.  The leaves are redder and the sun more orange.  It’s here: Fall.  It’s here and that means soon it will be chilled.  Soon there will be more layers.

But while there’s this tiny moment of warmth amid the red I’m going to indulge myself with kimonos in all their glory before they’re hidden under layers of knit.

Neutrality

Generally I’m against it.  I’m against is sartorially, and in a more broad metaphorical way too.  It’s non-committal, wishy-washy, and easy.

To dress neutral is a cop out because you know it’s going to look good, you don’t have to think about anything.  And by not thinking about things, you never really consider where you stand.  You never have to say that you’re this or that – boho, vintage, a pink lover, a hater of florals.  You never have to actually risk anything.

I’m always skeptical of and suspicious of people who only wear neutrals – because if you can’t commit and take a stand sartorially *where it’s arguably the easiest since there’s nothing on the line* then where else are you copping out?  Politically?  Socially?  Emotionally?

I know, you didn’t expect that today did you?

*This post has been brought to you by a woman who rarely cops out sartorially, politically, socially, or emotionally….except when she hasn’t slept for six nights and her brain has temporarily turned to mush*

Hope in Exhaustion: A Sartorial Discussion

It seems these pants are being worn with white tops and buns.  But I swear it’s accidental.  What they are really worn with is exhaustion.  Exhaustion is the motivator, and it just so happens that exhaustion goes with white tops – less to think about – and buns – less to do.

Plus a warm sweater, ’cause it’s chilly.  Really exhaustion.  But this goes to show * I hope* that being an exhausted mother, with a husband away on a business trip so no help, doesn’t mean you can’t have some modicum of style.

*Again… I hope*

The ability to throw on a dress and hat and go out the door.  That’s the beauty that is summer, and warm weather in general.  I’m really going to miss this beautiful ability as the temperature drops.  It’s going to be about smart layering to maximize warmth as opposed to the ease and freedom to run out the door on a whim.

Summer, we’ve parted too soon.

Fringed

Still trying to figure out this new schedule and life change.  In the meantime, I think my love for the fringe and the tassel is firmly in place.  Apparently, it’s also made for layering.  I have no issue with that.

Intentionally MIA

Being a little MIA last week was intentional.  With my girl off to school for the first full week ever, I wanted to take as much time for myself as possible.  To be honest, I want to do as much of that this week too, but life goes on so I’ll have to do some work after all.

I would drop her off, come home, and then stand in the house wondering what to do with myself.  Cups of tea, and a Sons of Anarchy marathon it was!  Plus, I’ve been playing some computer games that I bought but have never gotten around to….until now.

Yup, things aren’t too bad.  This week has a to do list, but I’m going to tackle it slowly.

How’s your week been?

Self-Effacing

There’s those silly tests online/facebook about “Which whatever are you.”  I enjoy them in as much as I find them a silly distraction.  The recent one was “Who would play you in the story of your life?”  I got Jennifer Lawrence because we apparently share the same affinity for honesty, intensity, girl next doorness, being one of the guys, and being self-effacing.

They are certainly an odd thing, those tests, but I found the whole thing about being self-effacing interesting.  Why would you not be self-effacing?  It’s good to look at yourself, see your faults and flaws, and then recognize them with humor.  I think it’s good for the soul.  Not only does it acknowledge that yes you do suck sometimes, but I’d like to think that it also shows acceptance and understanding that perfection is a delusional state.

Who knows, maybe I’m talking out my ass.  I do that sometimes.

My girl’s going to school today.

That’s pretty much all I can think.
