This gorgeous top is supposed to be a dress. It’s one of those beachy, devil may care boho dresses. Sadly, I’m actually quite tall and don’t spend my days on a beach in a photoshoot. Why would this matter? I’m so glad you asked.

It matters because the tallness means that it’s rather short. Like, just-covers-my-butt short. Which would be fine, on a beach, with a bathing suit underneath. But my day to day is spent with my girl, or running/biking around this fair city without a bathing suit on, or in studio. That means any arms gestures, such as the one above, would have me exposing my undies to children on the playground, pedestrians and drivers on the street, and clients in a studio.

And I certainly do not want to be arrested, hooted at from trucks, or bankrupt my business.
Hence, shorts.

As the weather inevitably turns, biking becomes  a bit of a challenge because though it’s warm when I leave, it’s chilly when I return home in the evening.  But it’s that weird cold where it’s not fully cold, just chilly, and definitely not warn.  These gauntlets from Jennifer Fukushima really have been great for biking.  They keep my hands and wrists nice and cozy, which is a very hard part to keep warm as I tend to have cold extremities, without feeling overheated.

Bonus points because it’s made in Canada, sustainability preference when sourcing material, and mostly natural fibers!  Jennifer is launching a whole new collection of clothing this Fall too – completely based around this social consciousness – showcasing her unique design aesthetic.

What Is A ‘Hot Mess’

What do you think of when you hear ‘hot mess”?  Is it someone in disarray but who has some semblance of charm or beauty?  If so, I’d like to think that you’d think of me.  Hopefully.

This odd, nerdy, and yes, often klutzy girl can be found trying to take a picture with her backpack falling off.  Catching her hat, like it’s supposed to magically save the backpack.   Opposite directions really!

C’est la vie.  *sigh*

Most women I know get all excited as the weather cools a touch and there is the hint of Fall around the corner.  I am not one of those women.

These women look eagerly onto the sweaters and the cute tights that they can soon start to wear with anticipation.  I am not one of those women.

They see scarves and beanies, and squeal with delight.  I am not one of those women.

The hint of Fall that excites many brings sorrow to me.  Perhaps, it’s because I have the constitution of a *well, I can’t think of anything, but something very easily cold*  And probably because Toronto sees it’s fair share *read: exhausting long months* of the cold and Winter.  All that combines to create me:  a woman who longs for every second of summer, who dreams of living in a warmer climate like California, and who wishes that Winter meant a sweater and leather jacket rather than the layers upon layers of thermal, wool, and parka.

That woman, this woman, is decidedly not happy to feel the chill in the air.

Walking along with my girl, she lets out a fart, giggles, then says, “‘Scuse me!”
She pauses, then continues, “You have to say ‘scuse me when you fart.”
Long pause.
Her brows furrow, and she secretly whispers to me, “Sometimes Daddy farts and doesn’t say ‘Scuse me.”
Another pause.
Then, “That’s RUDE!”
What more do I need to say?

Three hours of driving to a cottage go very quickly when you have someone as conversational and entertaining as my friend Reggy beside me.  It felt like a quick breeze.  What we arrived to, however, was far less entertaining.

Rain.

That first day it decided to rain pretty much the whole time.  It’s fine because us ladies had a ball chatting it up nonetheless.  We can always entertain ourselves.  But it did make for quick and slightly haphazard shots.

My choice was grainy shots because of darkness and much less rain because of the tree canopy, or risk my camera and go out into the full fall.  I chose grainy.  I hope y’all understand that the camera comes first.

As kids we dressed up all the time.  It was encouraged, and expected.  As we grow and take on the mature responsibilities of life, we’re not given the same freedom to play and dress up as before.  But sometimes,  like when you’re invited to the launch of a new play and costumes are encouraged, we get to give our inner child room to play again.

The best thing is that I didn’t have to buy a single thing.  All the pieces were in my closet, and I just had to put them together in a new way.  Except for the wig.  That was in my costume suitcase…you know the one, the one that’s filled with fun costumes pieces and dress up items.  You don’t have one?  You really should get one – it’s loads of fun!

Give me a 1920s themed play *Bootlegger’s Wife* and costumed launch party, thanks to creator Victoria Murdoch *above*, and I’ll give you one flapperific happy gal!

Sometimes you’re in a rush, things are frazzled, and don’t have the choice of taking ideal photos.  Those days turn into black and white days.  Not only in outfit choices, but also in photography styles.  It just seemed right to take this day, this outfit, down to it’s barest essentials – that of black and white.  Sometimes it’s just what you need.

Pause the News

We don’t have tv in the classic sense.  We have Netflix and networked computers.  So my girl is used to using a keyboard to play her shows and can navigate it pretty well.  So, recently we were watching the news on the three digital channels that we do actually get on tv (from the antenna) and she needed to go to the bathroom.  We got up to go.  She walked over to the keyboard and hit the spacebar, ’cause that’s what she does to pause her shows.

Nothing happened.  She did it again. Nothing. She furrowed her brow and tried one more time.  Then looked at me and said, “Mama, the show’s broken.  It’s not pausing.”

It was one of those moments when you realize that your upbringing and hers is totally different.  She’s so in tune with our tech that to her it makes perfect sense that you can pause all your shows, whereas I never did.  You left, you missed part of the show.

I know it’s a minor difference, but it’s illustrative of the greater differences between being a kid now, and being a kid then.

Busy few weeks coming up for me.  For everyone it seems.  Spring, right?  Rebirth, awakening.  It seems that everyone is moving suddenly and doing something.  Which is great.  I just wish someone would let the snow know that.  As in, “Hey, Snow, it’s Spring now so get your butt outta here!”
Moving on…
