Cool As Twiggy, Or Something Like it

Nautical Dress – Dear Creatures via Emerging Thoughts //  Shoes – Payless  //  Daenerys Necklace – Etsy  //  Sunnies – F21

This dress is such a departure from my usual style.  It’s very schoolgirl prep compared to my regular more boho flair, but when I bought it last year ago I could not have loved it more.  It’s partly due to the soft silky material, and partly due to the ’60s shift look of it that makes me feel like I’m as effortlessly cool as Twiggy.

Though, I think the nerdy Game of Thrones necklace and the fact that one side of my collar is popping up ruins that…

Casual Days

Laguna Shoes – c/o Lamo  // Top – Free People  //  Jeans – Gap  //  Fedora – unknown  //  Short V-Necklace – Vanessa Mooney  //  Long Chain – Homegrown Boutique  //  Sunnies – F21

They are days for lounging.  They are days for artfully created braids that hang accidentally over a shoulder.  They are days where sunglasses, hats, and sun rays are the best of bedfellows.  Days where strolling through the heat is an infinite activity.  Days where you slip your feet into beautifully crafted and luxuriously cushioned feet.

I could not think of a more perfect day to cradle my feet in my new Lamo shoes.  These Laguna ones I picked made me feel like around every corner a sandy beach or a crested wave would greet me.  Normally, you put on a pair of new shoes and that first day it’s like your feet and shoes are out on a first date – just getting to know one another.  But not these, these felt like old lovers, seeing each other for the first time but knowing exactly how they fit.

Yup, needless to say, these are fun and comfortable shoes.

Sarah Silverman shared some insight into being a grown woman.  One of those tidbits, was *I’m paraphrasing* that you don’t need a designer bag, “You put shit in it. Get a backpack.”

As much as I’ve tried to be cute with purses, I always carry a lot with me – camera, tripod, scripts, wallet, etc.etc. – and I think I’ve finally accepted the fact that I just need a backpack.  It’s better for my back, and leaves my hands free for all kinds of adventuring.

Sharing a Room With a Jedi

Everyone needs a casual day.  Here’s mine.  Not only was I motivated by comfort, but also a cool dream where I was bunk mates with Luke Skywalker (the Mark Hamil “return of the Jedi” one).  It was total genre mixing, because we were fighter pilots on the Battlestar Galactica and bunking in those four to six person dorm style rooms, but he was clearly a Jedi master.   He had the top bunk, because clearly when you’re a Jedi master you can have any bunk you want.

Recent election day had the whole family going down to the polls.  My girl was very interested in what we were doing.  So that evening, she and I had a conversation.  It went like this:

Her: “Why I don’t vote?”
Me: ” You will when you’re older.”
Her: “What I vote for?”
Me: “Who’s going to be in government.”
Her: “I want a lady.”
I had a proud feminist mom moment right there.

Make Your Own Kimono

I saw this kimono I loved at a shop, but unfortunately at $200 there was no way I was going to afford it anytime soon.  Instead, I pulled it out and inspected it.  I reverse engineered it in my head and unwrapped what the material looked like in my head.  When finished, I realized that it was actually super easy – possibly the easiest kimono in the world to make – and left that store for the fabric store.

Twelve dollars and 20 minutes at the machine later,  I had this.  Much better.

When things happen in life they sometimes have untended consequences.  For example, since I’ve seriously hurt my toe and made it black and blue all over, I think it entered my subconscious and made me pull out this black and blue number.

That, or this dress is just too darn fantastic to just sit around and it hides the unsightly toe perfectly.  Either one fits.

Cookies And Coincidence

Cookies, they don’t last long.  I don’t know if you know, that our whole family eats gluten and dairy free.  We both have strong intolerances, and as a result so does our girl.  She gets red and puffy around her eyes. Stick with me, there is a point. All gluten and dairy free treats tend to be much pricier than their regular counterparts.  As a result, we don’t often buy ice cream (coconut milk base) or cookies (GF&DF free).

But when sometimes there magically appears a bag of GF cookies we all collectively pounce on it like a pack of starving hyenas.  Of course, we all pretend to not be doing so…which makes it even more hilarious.  We feign and coy civility, meanwhile sneaking away cookies to be eaten secretly in a corner with a watchful eye lest someone come and take it away.

Then everyone acts surprised when at the end of the day the bag stands empty.  Only my girl is honest about eating the cookies.
The rest?  They disappeared into the black hole that occasionally appears in this house….when cookies and ice cream are present.
Strange coincidence.

“Mama,” I hear the whisper.  My eyes open slightly and lying next to me is that little girl I love.  She crawled into bed with me.

“It’s still sleepy time,” I say to her.  A tiny hand drapes over my neck as she cuddles in and I fall asleep.

Half an hour later I wake up, alone. I get up in search of her.  She’s not in her room.  I head downstairs.  When I walk into the living room I see her, sitting crossed legged on the couch, beading.  She looks up at me, “You up?”

“Yes,” I say and sit.  That’s when I notice it.  While I slept, she took off her night diaper, put on her underwear *albeit backwards*, and selected a pair of shorts, which she then donned *albeit coming in from one leg hole so that the waist is actually servicing as her left pant leg*, then went downstairs and started her day.

I know it’s small, but somehow those little acts made me realize how she’s growing up.

Ugh.

I’m not a pleasure to be around right now.  My neighbors, of our semi detached home, play loud music keeping me up all night (we’ve talked to them, and banged on the wall, etc. – nothing).  So I consistently get only four hours sleep.  Hence, I’m not a pleasure to be around…also consistently.

I have to say, that I’m grumpy right now.  Grumpy, and thinking up devious deeds that I could do.  Dreaming of what I could pull off.  Powdered laxatives anyone??  Mostly, I’m dreaming of dreaming…meaning sleep.

All right…onto coffee number three.  Have a fabulous weekend.
