Okay, I know you can’t see my shoes. I know that. I took the photos in a field of flowers and forgot to make sure you could see my shoes. Can I just tell you that I’m wearing brown and beige strap sandals? Would that suffice this time?

I hope so, ’cause this was a casual day that turned into a hectic running around the city with my toddler kind of day. And so I forgot the shoes.

Arrested, Hooted, and Bankrupt

This gorgeous top is supposed to be a dress. It’s one of those beachy, devil may care boho dresses. Sadly, I’m actually quite tall and don’t spend my days on a beach in a photoshoot. Why would this matter? I’m so glad you asked.

It matters because the tallness means that it’s rather short. Like, just-covers-my-butt short. Which would be fine, on a beach, with a bathing suit underneath. But my day to day is spent with my girl, or running/biking around this fair city without a bathing suit on, or in studio. That means any arms gestures, such as the one above, would have me exposing my undies to children on the playground, pedestrians and drivers on the street, and clients in a studio.

And I certainly do not want to be arrested, hooted at from trucks, or bankrupt my business.
Hence, shorts.

As the weather inevitably turns, biking becomes  a bit of a challenge because though it’s warm when I leave, it’s chilly when I return home in the evening.  But it’s that weird cold where it’s not fully cold, just chilly, and definitely not warn.  These gauntlets from Jennifer Fukushima really have been great for biking.  They keep my hands and wrists nice and cozy, which is a very hard part to keep warm as I tend to have cold extremities, without feeling overheated.

Bonus points because it’s made in Canada, sustainability preference when sourcing material, and mostly natural fibers!  Jennifer is launching a whole new collection of clothing this Fall too – completely based around this social consciousness – showcasing her unique design aesthetic.

In the movie “French Kiss” with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline there’s these two scenes where they discuss the fact that he’s not a fan of people and not a very ‘happy’ person. Part of the reason is that he doesn’t express his feelings. Now I do express my feelings – just ask anyone.  I’m pretty open about how I feel at the moment and how I feel about a person. Which makes it easier for people to know where they stand with me, I’d like to think.

But I’m not an extrovert. So in a similar way to Kevin Kline I’m not a huge fan of people and not what you would classify as a ‘happy’ person. You know, cheerful, positive, energetic, bouncy….’happy.’ I’m sarcastic, acerbic, intelligent, quirky, with a dry wit. I’d like to think I’m kind, but I’m also awkward and aloof.  Hey, that’s me, what can you do?

This is all to say, that I’m going to be “One of those grumpy old [people] sitting in the back of the cafe going, *said in French accent* ‘My ass is twitching. You people make my ass twitch‘”

Watch the movie, you’ll get it.

I Don’t Match

I don’t match things.  I don’t think about does this match per se.  I think does this ‘go.’  There’s a difference I think.  Matching means the same – it means they are the same.  When I put clothes on I don’t think about whether they are the same and therefore matching, I think about do they go together.

Do they bring something out in the other?  Do they create a contrast, a balance, or even spark your interest in the way the patterns, textures, or colors play off of each other?  Mostly, I ask myself do they feel right together?

This is all subconscious – mostly.  For instance, I didn’t realize these two pieces even had differing patterns.  They just felt right together.

Most women I know get all excited as the weather cools a touch and there is the hint of Fall around the corner.  I am not one of those women.

These women look eagerly onto the sweaters and the cute tights that they can soon start to wear with anticipation.  I am not one of those women.

They see scarves and beanies, and squeal with delight.  I am not one of those women.

The hint of Fall that excites many brings sorrow to me.  Perhaps, it’s because I have the constitution of a *well, I can’t think of anything, but something very easily cold*  And probably because Toronto sees it’s fair share *read: exhausting long months* of the cold and Winter.  All that combines to create me:  a woman who longs for every second of summer, who dreams of living in a warmer climate like California, and who wishes that Winter meant a sweater and leather jacket rather than the layers upon layers of thermal, wool, and parka.

That woman, this woman, is decidedly not happy to feel the chill in the air.

Mom Style

What is it?  Really?  To me, mom style is the style of a woman who happens to be a mom.  I know to some it means dowdy, or haphazard.  But I disagree.  How did we women get to be moms?  By being hot, and attractive…because let’s think a moment about how one becomes pregnant.  Think on that for a moment.

Now that you’ve thought about it.

I believe it’s a misnomer to think that once one has a child one has to suddenly forget that you have curves and sex appeal.  Yes, there are the pressures of time and the constraints given to thinking about style.  But jeans, a fun top, and great hat would solve any and all such occasional time constraints, would they not?

Those are my two cents for the day.

Children have this uncanny ability to say the most obvious things in a way that makes them seem profound.  Or at least in a way that signals that it is profound to them.

“My dog likes to smell stinky things….my dog….likes to smell…STINKY things.”

Case in point.

Walking along with my girl, she lets out a fart, giggles, then says, “‘Scuse me!”
She pauses, then continues, “You have to say ‘scuse me when you fart.”
Long pause.
Her brows furrow, and she secretly whispers to me, “Sometimes Daddy farts and doesn’t say ‘Scuse me.”
Another pause.
Then, “That’s RUDE!”
What more do I need to say?

Full Heat Languish

It’s all about loose flowy dresses and kimonos.  With my own aesthetic towards loose and, dare I say, boho clothing I find that summer is really the time to shine in terms of style.  First off, not only does my body adore the heat, loving temperatures that others abhor, but I love to shed layers upon layers of clothing.

I often find myself envying the bloggers that live in regions more warm than that of my Toronto.  When Fall rolls around and they’re rejoicing in the fact that they can add sweaters to their layering regimen, I’m already tired of wearing my parka and mitts.

So while the summer is still here, and I spend hours biking gloriously around our fair city,  I’m going to languish in the full heat and rays of the sun.  Languish and hopefully freeze this moment in time.
