We all want to feel special, am I right? We all want to feel like we’re not fading into the background. I’m not talking about being special for the nation, or in history. I’m talking about being special to the people in our lives – to friends, to lovers, to family. If a friend/lover calls you or texts but they also call/text everyone else – that doesn’t make you feel special. I mean what difference do you make to them in that case? If they reach out to only you, or share something with only you, that’s different. Then you matter. Then you’re not interchangeable with any other warm body.

That’s what I mean by special. Not “put me on a pedestal,” not “love me,” not “worship me” – just make sure that I’m not interchangeable with some other warm body, because that doesn’t recognize my individuality. That’s the best kind of special. The kind of special where your uniqueness is celebrated.

I’d like to think, I’d like to hope, that I do that to those in my life. I’d like to think that all my relationships feel special in that they are not interchangeable. Maybe I fail at this sometimes, but that’s my goal. Because these people in my life are all unique. They all bring different things to my life and deserve to be recognized for it.
