Two Pairs of Shoes

Dress – English Rose *from Ruche, I think*  //  Clutch – H&M  //  Shoes – Call It Spring

I went to the launch party of a historic event in Canada – the Independent Web Series Creator’s of Canada.  It was an absolutely great time, and if you’re in Canada you want to be a part of this organization.  So here I am all dressed up for the night.  I love how easy and loose this dress is.  Plus, I’m really loving mint green right now.

But here’s the real story I want to share with you.  In that clutch you see right at this very moment hides a pair of flats.  See I plan ahead.  After hours and hours in these gorgeous pink heels my feet were killing me.  I wasn’t about to spend time traveling home in pain.

As I rode the metro, I was accompanied by three teenagers who were out for the night too.  The young woman was leaning on her boyfriend because her feet hurt from her shoes.  He turned to her, just as I was passing them on the stairs, and said, “Why don’t you girls bring two pairs of shoes when you go out?”  Then as I passed I knew he pointed at me, and so I turned around and gave them a knowing smile while I gestured to the heels hanging off my fingers.

Yup, it’s  all about the two pairs of shoes.

Raw Kale and Toddlers

Top – Winners //  Skirt – F21 dress that I converted to a skirt  //  Belt – swapped  //  Hat & Sunnies – F21
Our friends call us the Hippie parents.  And I always wonder why exactly.  Sure we grow veggies in our garden, eat organic, gluten and dairy free as well.  And no we don’t stress over her eating dirt or kissing the dog; germs are good for her immunity.  But here’s what explained things for me.
I was busy juicing veggie juice for all of us.  I turned around to see Baby Girl standing and munching on the raw kale from the bowl of veggies prepped for juicing.  She was happily eating away and smiling at me.  I smiled back and started juicing.  Then she got upset because I juiced her ‘snack’ *that’s what she called it*  Juicing veggies, and a girl who gets upset when you take away her raw kale?  Yup, we’re hippie parents all right.  If by ‘hippie’ you mean kick ass awesome! Come on, a toddler who eats raw kale and likes it?!  That’s got to be some kind of achievement.

A LadyLike Dress With a Touch of Sass

Dress – c/o Simply Dresses  //  Shoes – Call It Spring  //  Necklace – F21
There was something very appealing about choosing a Simply Dresses dress that contrasted so much in design and color.  The design is bold and sexy, and the rich chocolate color I chose is so demure that I think the whole piece strikes a great balance.  As always this dress is impeccably made. The material is so rich and the layers underneath fill everything out perfectly.  I particularly appreciate the bust support added to the front.  I’m not superbly endowed so I don’t have to have a special undergarment, but the touch of padding to shape the dress is an appreciated touch so as not to show too much.  It’s the little details like this that make me love the dress.
From the front, the dress is deceptively ladylike, and it’s not until you turn around to walk away that you leave a bit of sass in your wake.  I’d like to think it’s a great reflection of the sides of myself, ladylike and demure with well, another side to me as well.
And as always, you have to have a great cover all and shades for the after, after party.  Where ever that might be.

Not A Trend

Top – Freeway via Ruche  //  Pants – Gap  //  Boots – Feet First  //  Sunnies & Earrings – F21
Can I just say a little something?  I love fashion, but maybe I’m not understanding something.  How is Black and White the trend for Spring?  It’s not a trend.  It’s a color combo.  Moreover, it’s a classic color combo dating back goodness knows how long.  It’s the simplest color combo.  This is not a trend for Spring, this is a classic and age old color combo that should have no one surprised.  I think it was pretty much the first thing I learned about fashion – that black and white go well together.  I’m somewhat dismayed that the fashion world has no more idea than to go back and call B&W a new trend for Spring.  I think we can be more creative than that.

New Year, New Look

   Top – Threadsence  //  Tee – Smart Set  //  Jeans – Gap  //  Boots – Locale  //  Necklace – F21
Okay, so clearly these photos were taken before we got dumped on with snow here.  I haven’t had a chance to post them yet, so before they get super duper old, here it is.  I hope you all are doing exceptionally well this fine day.  I’m excited for ModaMama to have a newer sleeker look for the start of 2013.  I just really like the simple minimalist look you know, and wanted a polished finish.  So that’s where I hope we are right now with the look of the site.

In other news, I get a whole day out today to game.  That’s right I’m getting my boardgame geek on today!

Hello 2013, Chal-lenge Accepted!

Scarf – Kensie   //  Sweatshirt – Alternative Apparel from Trixie  //  PJ Pants – La Senza  // Headband – Treasured Details

The ever lovely Amanda from Royal Daughter Designs tweeted:

So naturally I tweeted back, “Challenge Accepted!!!”  *because I really consider myself the Barney Stinson of fashion*  That’s the reasoning behind this stunning outfit you see here, and I am linking up for WIWW with it, and if you’re visiting from there, now you know the story behind this super chic look.  *sarcasm fully intended*

But as I took on this self-thrown down gauntlet, and as I’ve been reflecting on the last year, I think 2013 is the year of “Challenge Accepted!”  At least I’m going to try my darnedest to have the attitude of nothing being impossible and nothing being off the table.  This year, to paraphrase a friend, I’m doin’ things my way.  This year I’m not going to back down.  Chal-lenge Accepted!!

Dressember Week Three Link Up

Dress – ModCloth  //  Cardi – H&M  //  Tights – HUE
Boots – Feet First  //  Necklace and Belt – F21
It may be sweet dressing, but I am drawn to big classic floral dresses like this one.  Perhaps my own biting and sarcastic mind is starving to create some sort of balance.  Or perhaps it’s a soft exterior designed to fool and lull into submission.   Whatever the reason, this is the exterior.
Now, let’s see how week three of Dressember went for you.  Link up your post, FB pic or twitter pic.  I’d love to see how things went.  And of course, a link back or button display is much appreciated.

Embracing The Chaos

Skirt – Lovenell  //  Sweater – F21  //  Tights – HUE
Boots – Feet First  //  Necklace – Lustre  //  Scarf – street stand
I’ve given up I think.  The photobombing appears to be here to stay.  Even worse, every time I pull out the camera she finds a spot right in front, turns to me, and says “cheese!”  She thinks it’s all about her.  I guess that’s my fault, what with following her around with a camera since minute one.  So I’ve decided to embrace it rather than fight it.  This is my life, this is my fashion.
I guess it makes sense.  I’m not one of those immaculately put together fashionistas you see on the internet everywhere.  I don’t have every single hair perfectly in place, and I often do have toddler food on my clothes.  So it makes sense that my pictures are just as messy as me.

Return To My Roots

Dress – ModCloth  //  Sweater, Necklace & Belt – F21  //  Tights – Hue  //  Shoe – Clarks
Coat – Jacob  //  Scarf – Urban Outfitters  //  Mitts – Walmart
Sometimes words come from my lips unbidden and like a honeyed sea of witty sarcasm full of revelations and various other profundities.  Other days, like today, my mind is a discombobulated mess of rhythms, thoughts, and emotions all pulling me in different directions.  So pardon my lack of eloquence as I say that:
a) It was very windy and cold, yet I felt light and warm throughout.
b) Today I shucked my recent boho style and was drawn to the more ladylike side of my closet that has remained hidden of late.
c) I like the way a silky, satin dress feels against my skin as the wind plays with it on a cold day.
d) Yes, I realize that by eloquently stating my lack of eloquence I am indeed proving myself a bald faced liar.

Bend But Not Break

Sweater – Pink Martini  //  Skirt – Ark&Co  // Boots – Feet First  //  Tights – Hue
Bracelets & Necklace – F21

Though breezy, flowy skirts and pastels are reminiscent of Spring and the bright sunshine of Summer, I can’t seem to hide them away in a dark corner of my closet when the temperatures drop.  The soft pale material feels so vulnerable in the bitter cold wind, but it does not break, so perhaps there’s a hidden strength in it somewhere.
Or maybe I just like to wax poetic about something that is really a simple sartorial choice.
It’s probably that.
Yes, definitely.
