For Halloween, my little girl decided to be a butterfly. We made her costume, complete with antennae, from scratch using old cardboard boxes. I love that she had to work to create her costume, it made her so proud to go out and show everyone her wings.

And of course our house is not immune to the Frozen craze. She loves the music and asks me to put it on every afternoon after school so she can sing and dance along to it. Being the awesome mom that I am, I went on Ebay and got her an Anna costume (she’s an Anna, not an Elsa girl), and for an extra $13 got myself an Elsa costume. Now, it’s all about the Anna and Elsa cosplay as we sing and dance every afternoon.

Andrew’s been away on a lot of business trips lately. But there’s an upside….sometimes he comes home with cowboy boots from Nashville! I guess that’s allowed.

It was super cold, but I wanted to grab these shots before the light completely disappeared for the day. I had been inside all day shooting portraits of some fabulous and gorgeous people, and you know me, I’m all about ease and function when in the studio.

SO thankfully, the cowboy boots are totally functional ’cause I wanted to wear them ASAP.

With the cold I’ve retreated to the comfort of sweaters and jeans. My health is still not super great, so staying comfortable and cozy is a must needed boost to the spirits. And super soft, jersey sweaters are kind of awesome for that.

You guys have any favorite go-to things for comfort and spiritual healing? Things that make the soul feel good? I love tea, but would love some more tips.

Well, there you have it. Snow has come. We had a big snowfall. You know what that means? No more denial for me. I can no longer deny that the cold temperatures are here to stay, try as I might.

For a while there, I could ignore the frozen fingers as they worked the tripod and buttons, but once you’re getting snowed on and the scenery is pure white, well, there’s only so far delusions can take you, am I right?

Or maybe I’m not trying hard enough.

The geeky kung fu girl inside of me got loads and loads of giggles this day. Why? Because I coordinated my outfit to be the fighting style, tiger-crane. I wanted to wear my tiger shirt, and then I was thinking of layers to add on top, and when I remembered my fun crane embroidered sweater I was like yeah, Bruce Lee would love this! ‘Cause in my head he really cares about what I wear.

So yeah, I had a great time with the little inside joke between me and Bruce Lee.

Evolution of Dusters

Dusters were originally worn by horse riders as light jackets to, you know it, keep the dust off their clothing. In the fashion world, they’ve evolved into light kimonos that are usually maxi length. To me, the wild python print on this one hearkened back those days of cowboys and the wild west.

Being the sci-fi nerd that I am, it also brought to mind Firefly, and made me think this might be a duster that someone living in that verse might wear. I guess it’s the dreamer in me that is drawn to the free and untamed feeling that this duster evokes.

Now all I need is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.

….how about bringing it all together? The previous post was about maxis, and the one before that was about faux fur, somehow it feels like the perfect third part to bring maxis and faux animal into one outfit and one post, with this maxi leopard print skirt.

You would think genius like this is pre-planned, but you’d be wrong. Yup, this three parter is brought to you entirely by happenstance and the weird, idiosyncratic workings of my mind. I mean, er, yeah I totally planned this.

Aaaaaand, that’s the end of the genius.
It was very short lived.
Also, debatable if it was actually genius, but we’ll just give me that one, shall we?

Maxis Hold Little Secrets

Boho maxi dresses are just sublime. I love the wonderful assortment of patterns, the swish and swirl as you walk and turn. There’s something deeply satisfying in the weight of the material moving through the air with my movements. Almost a secret dance known only to me.

Also, there’s a great ease to them. For Winter, leggings and tights are easily hidden underneath for warmth, and sweaters just layer perfectly on top. The sweep and drama of bold colors and patterns make it look like you tried really hard – that’s another secret.

How Fabulous is Faux Fur?

Personally, I think it’s so much fin. It adds texture and interest to an outfit immediately. But to me it always has the danger of getting too glam or dressed up, so the fact that this jacket had a hood made it perfect because the hood brings it back down.

There’s a great level on contradiction in the playful, laid back hood, and the luxe, glam faux fur. And contradictions in clothes, and in people, are what adds such kaleidoscopic beauty to life.

Plus, it’s fuzzy.

I Tried Not To Laugh

My girl wanted to stand beside me. She was very whiny *she’s still fighting this horrible cold, by the way* and just wanted to be next to me, but also did not want Daddy to take photos of her. Oh the dilemma!

Though I felt bad for her feeling poopy, and I want to take her seriously, I couldn’t help but laugh; her pouty face is just hilarious. Trying to keep a straight face when she’s got her brows furrowed, her bottom lip sticking out, and her thumb in her mouth is really hard. I mean scaling-mount-Everest hard.

Side note, my shirt says “Weekend Uniform” and that’s pretty much what it is to me. Hat, kimono, loose tee, jeans, and boots. Yup, that’s about my casual day in a nutshell. Though, to be fair, most days are casual days so…
