What Rules?! : How To Wear Sequins During The Day

Sequins are only meant for the night, that rule is so antiquated I think.  It’s a perfect rule to break today.

I think the key to wearing sequins during the day is to keep everything around it laid back and casual – that means thicker textures and unstructured fits, like this chunky knit cardigan, and distressed jeans.   The worn in jeans, the loose fit and the thick scarf all add an air of casualness to this, which works against the dressed up feeling of the top.

And who doesn’t love a little sparkle in their day, am I right?

Next week – I’m mixing more prints.  Come back then.

Night Is When It’s Brightest

Dress – c/o eShakti  //  Shoes – thrifted  //  Earrings – F21  //  Tights – Sears
I styled this dress for day, but it really is an evening out kind of dress and that’s where it showcases best.  The sequined band hist you on, and just above, your natural waist which is the most flattering silhouette. That’s where our shapes are most accentuated.  And I love the slightly grungy abstract print.  It helps to make an otherwise sweet dress a little more, dare I say, grown up?

Perhaps my favorite part of these photos is that the tree branch makes it look like my hair is flying wildly around my head.  It adds a wonderful frenzy to an otherwise serene picture.  I kind of love that contrast.

Casual Glam with Pleather Pants

Pants, Clutch & Shoes – H&M //  Top – Zara  //  Jacket – F21  //  Bracelet – c/o Atterley Road
Toronto is in the midst of it’s International Film Festival.  That means, screenings and events galore.  My favorite kind of industry or TIFF party is the kind that calls for what I like to call, “casual glam.”  To me that’s when you get dressed up and glamorous up but not in a formal dress kind of way.  I love that I could take out my new pleather pants out for a spin for just such a party.
I think you’ll be seeing pleather pants a lot from me this season.  I love leather and pleather accents and now they’re everywhere!  Used to be that I would find that single gem semi-annually that had pleather accents.  Id’ snap it up in a second.  And now it’s everywhere.  For a pleather hog like me it’s a veritable wonderland!

p.s.  I tried to do Jon at Evoke Salon proud by recreating the soft waves look he gave me after my recent haircut.  Passable, but there’s no substitute for the pro!

Wild Ferret

You all know I love a good paradox or contradiction in terms.  Well, pairing a feminine, sequined jacket with an Aliens inspired tee is pretty much the perfect combination for me.  It’s like the rock ‘n roll tee and chiffon pairing but for nerds you know?  Here I was on my way to a backyard fencing league some friends of mine started.  My fighting sigil?  Wild Ferret, because at one point someone sparring with me said it was like trying to bottle a wild ferret.  That’s me.  Cute, cuddly, wily and vicious when I need to be.

Two Pairs of Shoes

Dress – English Rose *from Ruche, I think*  //  Clutch – H&M  //  Shoes – Call It Spring

I went to the launch party of a historic event in Canada – the Independent Web Series Creator’s of Canada.  It was an absolutely great time, and if you’re in Canada you want to be a part of this organization.  So here I am all dressed up for the night.  I love how easy and loose this dress is.  Plus, I’m really loving mint green right now.

But here’s the real story I want to share with you.  In that clutch you see right at this very moment hides a pair of flats.  See I plan ahead.  After hours and hours in these gorgeous pink heels my feet were killing me.  I wasn’t about to spend time traveling home in pain.

As I rode the metro, I was accompanied by three teenagers who were out for the night too.  The young woman was leaning on her boyfriend because her feet hurt from her shoes.  He turned to her, just as I was passing them on the stairs, and said, “Why don’t you girls bring two pairs of shoes when you go out?”  Then as I passed I knew he pointed at me, and so I turned around and gave them a knowing smile while I gestured to the heels hanging off my fingers.

Yup, it’s  all about the two pairs of shoes.

Wooing The Sun

 Dress – Moon Collection via Ruche //  Sweater – Gap  //  Vest – AE  //  Tights, Belt & Pink Ring – F21
Boots – Feet First  //  Necklace – bought in Spain  //  Earrings – c/o This Enchanted Pixie
Flower Ring – Ruche  //  Silver Oval Ring – Threadsence.

As the weather gets colder and the days get shorter and drearier, my arms automatically start reaching for brighter colors and lighter tones.  I know it’s the opposite of what’s ‘supposed’ to occur, with Autumn bringing deeper tones and richer shades, but it’s my instinctual reaction to reach for the bright and light.  Maybe my body believes it can will the heat and sun back, or woo it like a lover with an array of color draped over me in an eternal bouquet.

Delving Into The Depths Of Grunge Depravity

Shirt – AE; Top – Jacob; Jeans – Guess; Boots – Aldo.

I’m loving a certain return to Grunge that’s going on in fashion right now.  I won’t, however, be embracing the no washing, dirty hair part of grunge.  But I am enjoying the resurgence of plaid.  And for the trip to the Doctor’s and for voice recording I wanted to remain very low-key and laid back.  Hence this plaid shirt. But I didn’t want to delve into the depths of fashion depravity, so I paired the ripped jeans and plaid shirt with a sequined top.  I think it added a little bit of fun to the whole ensemble.  And the fact that it’s a big sequin peace sign just made me smile the whole day.

Sequins are really in for the Fall, and not just for nights.  They’re really great during the day, but you have to make sure that you walk a fine balance between too dressy and too trashy.  It’s a difficult line to walk.  And it’s not one that I usually take on.  But I felt bold this day.  I only hope I managed to pull it off.

Oh and sorry about the odd shots today.  I didn’t have time to take pics until I got home – and the sun had already gone down by then.  So you get to see my sweaty, flat hair self.  And welcome to my den!

Speaking of sun going down.  The moon was out in a wonder of cloud and glory!
