What do you think of when you hear ‘hot mess”?  Is it someone in disarray but who has some semblance of charm or beauty?  If so, I’d like to think that you’d think of me.  Hopefully.

This odd, nerdy, and yes, often klutzy girl can be found trying to take a picture with her backpack falling off.  Catching her hat, like it’s supposed to magically save the backpack.   Opposite directions really!

C’est la vie.  *sigh*

The Wildflowers Are Dying

The wildflowers are starting to die.  They are drooping and turning that dark shade of brown.  I know this means the end of summer.  The end of that glorious heat which my body craves incessantly.
But I cling to it.
Desperately.
Hoping that enough warm breezes, enough overgrown fields will freeze the moment.  Will keep the seasons from changing, from passing, as they must.

Child Profound

Children have this uncanny ability to say the most obvious things in a way that makes them seem profound.  Or at least in a way that signals that it is profound to them.

“My dog likes to smell stinky things….my dog….likes to smell…STINKY things.”

Case in point.

Full Heat Languish

It’s all about loose flowy dresses and kimonos.  With my own aesthetic towards loose and, dare I say, boho clothing I find that summer is really the time to shine in terms of style.  First off, not only does my body adore the heat, loving temperatures that others abhor, but I love to shed layers upon layers of clothing.

I often find myself envying the bloggers that live in regions more warm than that of my Toronto.  When Fall rolls around and they’re rejoicing in the fact that they can add sweaters to their layering regimen, I’m already tired of wearing my parka and mitts.

So while the summer is still here, and I spend hours biking gloriously around our fair city,  I’m going to languish in the full heat and rays of the sun.  Languish and hopefully freeze this moment in time.

Gazebos? Really?

There’s this secret that everyone else is in on, and yet I’m left out of.  It’s a secret that everyone just instinctively knows, it’s in the DNA, except that I seem to be missing that gene.  It’s the “What the heck is the real purpose of Gazebos” gene.

Honestly, what is the purpose and the logic of having a tiny little gazebo shoved in around a beach, trees, and field?  It’s only big enough for maybe three people and it seems to serve no function.  I have yet to find a gazebo of who’s purpose and function I am capable of gleaming.

It’s a tiny little wood structure in the middle of nowhere with rather uncomfortable seating, so it’s plain that they don’t want you resting there. The views are usually obstructed by timber. It’s never in a convenient location. Plus, there’s a decided lack of hammocks. So really, what’s a gazebo for?

Other than being a fun background for a fashion blogger of course.

Three hours of driving to a cottage go very quickly when you have someone as conversational and entertaining as my friend Reggy beside me.  It felt like a quick breeze.  What we arrived to, however, was far less entertaining.

Rain.

That first day it decided to rain pretty much the whole time.  It’s fine because us ladies had a ball chatting it up nonetheless.  We can always entertain ourselves.  But it did make for quick and slightly haphazard shots.

My choice was grainy shots because of darkness and much less rain because of the tree canopy, or risk my camera and go out into the full fall.  I chose grainy.  I hope y’all understand that the camera comes first.

This lovely day started with a mama-daughter date for coffee and croissant.  You would think that an omen like that would lead to a fabulous day.  But alas, thundershowers started in the early evening, and even though I had organized a games night, I was in the basement, solo and on my hands and knees, bailing water.
It was unapologetically flooding! The first friend to arrive on the scene, threw himself into the bailing without hesitation.  As the rain subsided, together we managed to get it into some semblance of control.  When everyone else arrived, we paused and played games.  One can only take so much.

Halfway through, while one game was being packed up, two friends *one of which I had literally just met!* came down to bail some more since during the interim more water had built up.  And finally, when the night was being laid to rest, the rains having stopped, we collected the last of the water.  Ten buckets during the course of the evening was the final tally.

I left the dehumidifier on for the next two days, dried a carpet out in the sun, and so far nothing else is the worse for wear.

But let me just say, you know who your real friends are by who is willing to get down and dirty to bail some basement water with you.

Recent election day had the whole family going down to the polls.  My girl was very interested in what we were doing.  So that evening, she and I had a conversation.  It went like this:

Her: “Why I don’t vote?”
Me: ” You will when you’re older.”
Her: “What I vote for?”
Me: “Who’s going to be in government.”
Her: “I want a lady.”
I had a proud feminist mom moment right there.

I saw this kimono I loved at a shop, but unfortunately at $200 there was no way I was going to afford it anytime soon.  Instead, I pulled it out and inspected it.  I reverse engineered it in my head and unwrapped what the material looked like in my head.  When finished, I realized that it was actually super easy – possibly the easiest kimono in the world to make – and left that store for the fabric store.

Twelve dollars and 20 minutes at the machine later,  I had this.  Much better.

Sometimes the behind the scenes of these outfit pictures are the better story than the pictures.  Not thirty minutes ago I fell on my bike and thought I broke my toe.  Did I go to the hospital?  No.  The Doctor?  No.  I stopped to take outfit photos, then joined a friend for coffee, and went to a fun Guess event.  Then rode my bike home.

I did however, buy a tension bandage along the way and wrap my toe for the night’s festivities.  Luckily, by the time I got home, I was pretty sure that despite being black *eek!  Yes it was/is black and bruised* that it’s nothing too serious since I was in relatively little pain with no pain killers…as long as I didn’t try to walk on it.

*SuperHero Stance* I laugh in the face of pain!
Ouch.
