Heart on a Sleeve

Spell-Route66-overalls-boho-fashion

As much as I try, as much as I claim to be jaded and cynical, I often fail. As a friend once said to me, “You think you are, you hope you are, but you’re not.”  That same friend now routinely calls me ‘innocent.’

I think I’m far from that. I think I’m very pragmatic. And I am. But at the same time there’s a part of me that believes in unicorns and magic…or in my case, spaceships and heroes.  *Think Mal from Firefly riding in on his beat up cargo hauler and rescuing the girl. He’s jaded and cynical but highly idealistic.*

I guess there’s that part that hopes people have the best intentions, and hopes that people have love in their heart, and will speak their truth.  To be fair, as much as that will get me hurt, I don’t want to stop believing and hoping that every person I meet will be as truthful and gentle with me as I try to be with them.  I know that’s not the case, but I choose to believe and act until shown otherwise.

No mystery here. I’m an open book.  I hope you come to me the same.
If so, we can get a coffee.

If not, well…..speak softly and carry a big stick.
I carry a sword.

The Kiss

Arnhem-Maxi-Dress-womens-boho-fashion

Kiss.  The kiss.
Lips touch and universes are born.  That’s how kisses should be.

They can be tender.  Passionate.  Desperate.
Gentle. Rough. Playful.
Romantic. Soft.

But whatever they are, whatever you make them, make them moments when two people come together for a brief moment in time.
Make them moments that freeze a heartbeat.

Make them moments when universes are born. Even if only for just one brief second.

Go kiss someone.

Asking

Rock-Star-style-boho-womens-fashion

Why is it often so hard to ask?  Why do we have a hard time asking for things we want and need?

You know, asking someone you like to spend time with you *coffee, dinner, etc.* Asking someone you love to give you a something you need.  We have such difficulty with it.

I guess there’s that fear of not getting what you want.  But I perhaps there’s also that fear of getting it.  ‘Cause what then?

Sometimes though, all you need is a great breeze, a pair jeans, sunglasses, and Janis Joplin blarring out your car stereo.

Castaway

Spell-Designs-Ophelia-lace-maxi-dress

The day alternated between sudden bursts of rain – darkening the skies and raising the winds to a howling volume – to the gentle warmth of the sunshine bright and warm on the skin.

Either way, the private beach, our view for three days, was perfect. Down from the road, it felt like an isolated island in a series of magical little islands. I stood there imagining I was in another world. A world of tropical breezes, sun kissed skin, and the languorous arms of a lover wrapped around you.

Perfection, no matter how you define it.

Finding Something

Lace-Shirt-Pants-boho-womens-fashion

What is it that we’re trying to find? What is it? What is that thing we’re all looking for?  Some say it’s happiness. Others contentment. Some says it’s excitement. Others peace. Some say it’s silence. Others the noise of life.

What are you spending a whole lot of time trying to find?  And if I may dare ask the question, is it worth the effort?

So what is it we’re all chasing?  And I wonder if we’ll get fulfillment if we find it.

All The Good Things

Spell-Designs-Kimono-Rock-Tee-Boho-Fashion

Something about sitting around a campfire with moonlight and starlight streaking down. With a lovely whiskey and good friends, there is perfection. I did that.

I had friends – loved ones – around a fire. Relationships deepened. Laughs were had. I became a marshmallow hero. It was beautiful, in that imperfect, not profound kind of way.

All I did was sit around a campfire with some people, some could say. But my love for them deepened. And I could convey a million words in simply holding my good friends hand and watching the fire burn the past.

Responsible Fashion

Ungalli-clothing-ethical-sustainable-clothing

Heading up to the cottage this past long weekend, I was yet again struck by the beauty that we have in nature.  Also, the profound meaning and connection we can achieve by just sitting quietly and letting the world move around us.

In my daily life, I try to live as ethically and sustainably as possible. It’s a daily journey, and I’m not sure I’ll ever be 100% there. It’s hard when daily conveniences are, well, convenient.

Though having recently partnered with Ungalli clothing, a 100% sustainable and ethical Canadian clothing company, I had a lovely moment standing on the dock wearing the softest hoodie possible, knowing that in wearing it I had not brought harm to any of the beauty around me.

This hoodie was the perfect running and lounging layer around the cottage – not too heavy and ultra snuggly. Kind of perfect for a day spent swimming, laying in the sun, and warming around a campfire.

Ungalli has a threefold mission. First, their clothes are made from recycled material. Second, they’re made in North America under our labor laws. Third, they partner with different environmental organizations to both promote *through their designs* and to donate money from every sale.

Yay!

But lest you think that these are only cottagey, camping clothes.  Let’s be clear: they totally belong in any urban fashionistas arsenal. This tee is definitely in my favorite tees list.  Not just because of the softness, but also because of the lovely uplifting message it has.  Personally, it reminds me to be present in my life daily. To embrace and feel every moment, and imprint it in memory.

A Millions Things….

Guess-Maxi-Dress-Fedora-womens-boho-fashion

…go wrong. Everyday. You wake up with a certain expectation of the day, at least I do, and everyday it turns out different.  Sometimes better, sometimes worse, and sometimes just different.

So how do we deal with it?  Get angry that the day didn’t turn out as we wanted?  Yeah, sometimes I do that. I wish I didn’t though. I wish I didn’t put expectations on a day. But that the curse of humanity isn’t it?  A desire to control what is impossible to control. I’m trying, emphasis on ‘trying’, to take the day as it comes. Still have goals, but realize that the unexpected and the beautiful can intrude on those days. Can intercede and either cause wonder or frustration.

I’m trying to be okay with that.

Messy Hair, Don’t Care

Embroidered-Shorts-Bell-Sleeve-Blouse

There’s this image that bloggers, mostly fashion and lifestyle, present.

Of course, it’s the perfectly lit and edited photos showcasing the oh-so-effortlessly-chic outfit that looks absolutely perfect.  Yet the reality is this.  This photo above taken at the end of the day.  Hair is messy and sweaty from the thirty five minutes I literally just spent biking in high heat and humidity.  The braid has become mussed from the day as well. And this outfit was more utilitarian than chic.

What you don’t see is the coffee spill from rushing.  Or the ketchup that slipped out and onto pants. Or the wrinkles that happen when you’ve sat and just lived in clothes.  You don’t see that. Because outfit photos are usually taken before all that, or it’s photoshopped out. And you definitely don’t see such stellar, model worthy shots like the graceful one below:
