Comments on the internet. Yes, you all know where I’m going with this. I recently had an interesting encounter.
I commented on something, and then another person engaged with my comment in a very negative, anger/ bitter filled way. I took a breath and instead of engaging back in a defensive manner, tried the idea of empathy. My first reply was a calmer energy empathetic one, and after a response, I simply stated that I was hurt and could the comments please stop. They did.
I don’t know if that had any effect on the person at all – obviously – but I think it was a more honest way to engage instead of lashing back and escalating things.
What’s my point? Maybe let’s all empathize and realize that a negative comment likely has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with the pain the other person may be going through.
