Kimono/Cardigan – Arnhem  //  Queen top – F21  //  Shorts – Spell Designs  //  Boots – DIYed myself  //  Necklace – Vanessa Mooney via ThreadSence

The Miami outfit posts are coming in now.  Monday’s walk through Coconut Grove and along the waterfront was glorious. And I couldn’t resist changing into shorts at the first opportunity.  These Spell shorts are fabulous. I sized up in them just a touch because I wanted the extra length in the bum. As in, I wanted my bum fully covered when I was walking.

This Arnhem maxi cardigan was definitely perfect in the day to protect from the sun, and in the evening to protect from the cooler breeze. Plus, it stole the show everywhere I went.  People were constantly remarking on it.

I wore this while travelling from Toronto with Jeans.  It provided enough warmth in the snowy weather, and then with a quick switch out to the shorts was perfect in the higher temperatures of Miami.  When I’m travelling like this I like to think about what will easily work with both climates so that you’re comfortable and not freezing or boiling on one end.

Side note: it also makes the perfect thing to wear when your breezing through the hotel on the way to the pool and back.

What to Wear to an Indie Launch Party.

Just before the mountains of snow descended upon us, before the weather fell to a painful minus thirty nine degrees celsius, before Toronto turned into the ice planet Hoth, I went out.  I went out and got some photos on a balm plus one degree day.  It’s sad to think that I long for the warmth of plus one.

I stood there taking pictures for the launch party of another brand, and I remember thinking, “This isn’t too bad.  I could handle this kind of Winter.”  Oh what a fool I was.  I had no idea what was coming.  Every year around this time, the outfit posts slow, because I doubt you guys are interested in seeing the same pair of eyes peeking out from under the same blanket day in and day out…sitting beside a space heater.

Maxi Lace Dress – Arnhem  //  Sweater – Ruche  //  Belt – Hadley Pollet  //  Boots – Aldo  //  Necklaces – F21

I love this gorgeous maxi dress from Arnhem.  It’s really a summer piece meant to be worn over a bikini rather than layered for this Winter weather.  But as you all know, I don’t like labels like “Summer” and “Winter” on clothing.  So I’m playing around and trying to figure out ways to wear this gorgeous piece all year round.

Thoughts? Other ideas on how to wear it? You guys always inspire me.

Happy Christmas

There’s this shop I love, Spell and the Gypsy Collective based out of Australia, and as a newsletter subscriber I get all the updated info.  Usually their clothes are way out of reach for this artist Mama, but I marked my calendar when news came out of their big huge warehouse sale.

The thing was I was booked for a big photography gig out of town that same day.  The gig finished a half hour into the sale.  On the day, I drove to my gig and had a blast doing it.  The event started winding down early and after a discussion with my lovely client, we agreed that I should leave a touch early as things were clearly over *I had arrived early and started early so I felt that was fine to leave – normally I would’ve insisted on staying*

So I got in my car and started the long drive back home.  Soon though I remembered the sale and noticed that it had just started.  So what did I do?  I pulled over.

There I was: on the side of the highway, in an empty parking lot of a model home development/sales centre, in the middle of nowhere Ontario, on my phone shopping the warehouse sale.  If the police had been there and taken interest it would’ve been one heck of an explanation. But I grabbed some amazing pieces at incredibly low prices, so in my book it’s a win!

*this post will also answer the question that a lot of people have about me, both online and in real life: how do I have so much variety and great quality in my wardrobe? Side of the highway, empty parking lot, in the middle of nowhere on a phone people, that’s how*

Not How I Was Dressed

This weekend was a roller coaster.  Friday night I had the chance to celebrate a great lady’s birthday.  Saturday things seemed to go well but my Girl was a bit under the weather.  This progressed to a full blown fever that persisted the rest of the weekend.  As this is posted this morning, I know she’s not going to school.

Poor girl spent Sunday on the couch drinking tons of water/juice and sleeping on Mama a lot.  Let’s see how the Monday goes.

Oh and trust me, this is not how I was dressed on Sunday…but it was how I was dressed on another day.

Year Round Closet

I know some people rotate their closets for the seasons, but I don’t really do that.  Sure I put away any halter tops and bikinis, but otherwise it all stays in there because I just wear it differently.  This romper for example, it’s backless and strappy, and made for summer, so in the summer that’s how I wear it.  But it’s such a great print and I love the cut that to put it away for half the year seems a shame.  Enter layering.

A cami underneath, and a sweater and jacket combo on top and I’m ready to rock it for Fall.  Who says you can’t have your closet year round!

Predictable and Fun Coffee Date

Another nice fall day meant that I could get out with my girl to a coffee date.  She of course had her croissant, and I had my coffee.  Then came the requisite visit to the playground.  It’s a predictable pattern, but I missed it.  This was one of the things I wanted to get back to.

We have fun. She loves talking to the lovely people who work at SuperCoffee, even though she gets all shy.  My girl and I have great conversations over coffee and croissant, and then she has a blast sliding down the big kid slide at the park.  Perfect.

Following up on yesterday’s post.  The mental and emotional journey was staggering over the last month.  I spent a lot of time crying, and feeling sad.  I was terrified that it would be a chronic or long term condition which had me really blue because all I saw were the things that I wouldn’t get to do.

Then came a point where I suddenly saw my old life (what came before this illness) and what I had, and was incredibly grateful for that.  I had so much life, so much freedom, and so much to be grateful for.  All I wanted was to get back to that.  So once I started to feel better, I was excited that I would get that old life back.

And now, for all intents and purposes, I do.  So that makes me happy.  I have so much freedom to do what I love and have amazing experiences.  But I do feel moments where the old downer thoughts – that I’m not booking enough as an actor or photographer – and the doubts – that I’m not good enough as a person, actor, photographer – try to creep back in.  It’s hard.  We all have a “Negative Nancy” as my naturopath calls her.  And I know we all have our ways of managing her.  I’m just trying to figure out a way to hang on to those feelings of gratitude and appreciation, rather than allowing Negative Nancy a megaphone.

How do you stay grateful?  And what things do you use to keep Negative Nancy at bay?

…so we’re firmly into Fall.  The layering begins. I do love the golden light that drowns the richer colors.  I do love the tones that start to dominate the city.  But I deeply lament the end of the warmth.  It feels like I’m breaking up with the Sun.  It feels like we’re giving each other the parting kiss goodbye.

And I don’t like that.  Absence does not make the heart grow fonder.  As much as I love the rich hues of Fall, my heart will always lie with the bright and vivid hues of Summer.
