Chojnice. It’s the nearest ‘big’ town. It’s not really that big, not when you’re used to living in Toronto, but it is the biggest town around.
Takes about 40 minutes to drive there. It’s where my Babcia was born and where she lived for a while.
It’s where we went to the mall – the closest one. The square is darling and delightful. But I never know if it’s the original or the reproduction. You see, many many things were utterly leveled and destroyed in the wars. Germany was not kind to Poland.

August 28, 2022I believe these historic buildings are genuine. I myself am a German with the Ukrainian origin and I used to visit my first motherland rather often. As I traveled by train, I visited numerous Polish cities in the intervals between the trains. Actually it’s only Warsaw and Gdańsk, where the almost completely destroyed old city was rebuilt in almost the same appearance. In other cities badly damaged during World War II (for instance in Białystok), only some selected historic buildings were rebuilt, but the rest of the central parts of these cities were built up in the post-war style called “Stalinist Classicism.” Some houses were rebuilt with very simplified façades.
